The process of delivering a baby is natural and is usually done in a normal way. However, in the past few decades, more deliveries are being made through C-section or Cesarean section; to save the baby and the mother from the complications caused at the time of delivery.
Both C-section and normal delivery are accompanied by postpartum symptom that is a heavy flow of mucus and blood. It starts immediately after the delivery and lasts for ten to 12 days. In some cases, spotting or light bleeding continues for around four to six weeks.
Causes Of Bleeding After C Section Delivery:
Your body gets rid of all the extra tissue and blood that is stored for nourishing your baby during the pregnancy period, irrespective of whether you had a normal or C-section delivery, This is called Lochia.
- Lochia is similar to what you have during your regular period. The only difference is that it is heavier and for longer period of time.
- Sometimes the flow will also have small pieces of tissue and mucus that comes from the uterus. Especially from the area where the placenta was attached to the uterus.
- There is no need to be afraid of the heavy flow or such small chunks of tissue in the flow, as it is perfectly normal and will not last for more than a fortnight.
- In the initial few days after delivery the flow will be heavy and thicker.
- Soon, the bleeding will decrease and you will also see that the darkness of the flow turn from dull red to pink, brown and eventually yellowish white.
In any case, the flow of Lochia must stop within six weeks from the delivery. If you are still bleeding after the six weeks, you need to consult your caregiver or physician.

Managing The Heavy Bleeding After C Section:
After the C-section delivery, for the first few days you are advised complete rest and there are certain restrictions on your movements. However, keeping yourself clean is highly important for the wellness and hygiene of the baby and yourself.
So, how do you manage the heavy flow? Here is a short guide:
- In the first few weeks, when the flow is heavy, use thick pads almost similar to the thickness of the diaper of your baby.
- Avoid using tampons as they can cause bacterial infection. During this early stage your genital tract and uterus is still recovering and vulnerable to infections; inserting a tampon is thus not advised.
- Use panties and clothes that you can throw away later. Using new or favorite clothes at this time is not a good idea, as stains from bleeding can happen and are difficult to remove. Old cotton panties are best.
In case, the flow shows large clots or has a foul smell, then you should contact your doctor as normal lochia has a smell similar to regular period.
You will need lots of pads after the delivery. So keep a good stock of maternity pads with you.
- Buy good quality maternity pads; do not use cloth
- Around three packs with 12 pads can suffice. In the initial few days you will have to change pads hourly and thereafter by 3-4 hours.
- Wash your hands with disinfectant every time you change the pad.
Rest Is Best!
Complete rest is advised in the first couple of weeks when you are bleeding heavily.
- No hard work during this time, not even lifting! Physical strain can reverse the recovery process and even increase bleeding.
- Your body has undergone a great change, and is recovering and repairing, so you need to co-operate and facilitate the process.
- Do arrange for help and support at this time, either from family or a professional assistance network.
With proper care and good hygiene, you can smoothly get over these initial few days after the C-section or normal delivery. Remember to drink a lot of fluids, rest in plenty and eat good balanced meals. Within a few days you will be back to good health and can enjoy precious moments with your little angel!
