Your pregnancy is a time when you will go through some of the biggest changes ever!

Apart from the development of the fetus in your womb, you will undergo various changes like physiological changes, physical changes and major mood swings.

As your fetus develops, you may have to cope with mild to moderate pregnancy related complications. One such complication that may arise during pregnancy is the Carpal tunnel syndrome.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel is the “palmer side” of the wrist, which is attached to the hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that involves pain in fingers, hand, a sensation of tingling, weakness or a numb feeling. These symptoms are triggered when the wrist’s median nerve gets pressurized. Symptoms can affect both your hands and attacks can be sudden.

As a matter of fact, carpal tunnel syndrome is more common in people who are into desk jobs or spend several hours in front of a PC every day.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is often triggered by pregnancy induced swelling of body parts and nerves. The symptoms go away without treatment post childbirth in most cases.

Causes Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome In Pregnancy:

When you are pregnant, your body retains fluid and swells. This swelling puts pressure on carpal tunnel and eventually squeezes the median nerve running through it. The median nerve carries sensation to the fingers and plays a role in thumb muscle movements.

Treatment Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome During Pregnancy?

While a majority of women do not need surgical intervention to get rid of this syndrome, some others might need it.

However, you should try non-surgical and home based remedies to reduce the symptoms and get rid of the numbness in hand and fingers. Here are a few that will help you cope with the carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy:

  • Find out what activities are leading to the development of the symptoms in the first place. If you find evading those activities is bringing relief or at least reduction of symptoms that is what you should do. Take a break from repetitive tasks like typing in front of the PC.
  • Use proper accessories if your job involves spending long hours in office cubicle. For example, you can use a height adjustable chair which helps put less strain on the hands and wrist. Similarly, you can get an ergonomically designed keyboard with palm rest for working without stressing fingers.
  • If the numbness and pain in fingers occur at night, try to stabilize the position of the wrist. You may use a specially developed wrist spleen for that. At the same time, avoid sleeping by resting the head on palms. You may even try using a soft pillow or cushion when you doze off.

When to Seek Medical Intervention?

If you happen to be among those women who do not get relief from the symptoms of Carpal tunnel syndrome, seeking expert medical intervention remains the only viable choice.

  • Observe if the pain is reducing after giving birth to your infant or not. If the symptoms do not show signs of reduction, get in touch with a suitable doctor.
  • In most cases, an orthopedist deals with patients suffering from prolonged syndrome.
  • It may so happen that the doctor or orthopedist can ask you to try non-surgical option at the beginning.
  • They can offer some anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen. If such drugs do not show any improvement, the doctor may administer injections of cortisone.
  • In rare cases, a simple surgery can be executed to give relief to the median nerve.
