No matter which corner of the world you live in, if you are a daughter-in-law, you will sooner or later have to face the wrath of the monster, err, sorry mother-in-law. And she knows how to play her cards right, so that you never know what’s coming your way.
At one moment, she will give you the sweetest smile, and in the next, she’d snarl at you like a lioness. As perplexing as she can be, she is going to give rise to plenty of hurtful situations. Here are five fights that you will almost certainly have with your mother-in-law.

1. The battle of the master chefs
There’s a secret you need to know before you meet your mother-in-law. She is the greatest cook in the history to have graced this planet, at least according to her. So you can expect to face a lot of flak when you offer her your cooking. Be prepared to listen to some classic taunts like there’s too much pepper in this; there’s too little salt in this; how will my son survive when you cook like that! Even if you present a five-star meal in front of her, there would always be something lacking.

2. The battle of cleanliness
Your mom-in-law is the queen of cleanliness and is an expert in keeping her house cleaner than you ever can. Even if you spend all day cleaning every nook and cranny of your house, your mother-in-law’s hawk eyes will find that one spot that you forgot about and she will hanker about it till the world’s end. You should know that in life there will be fights that you cannot win, and this one just happens to be one of them so don’t bother trying.

3. The battle of the rituals
Never. Cross. Your. Mother. In. Law. When. It. Comes. To. Rituals. And. Customs. She’s a walking encyclopedia of all of them, and she’s the only one who can carry out traditions and rituals the right way. She knows how to put the ‘tilak’ straight while yours will always be crooked. And while she can croon like a nightingale while singing the ‘aarti,’ you can barely even join your hands in prayer properly. You can try to convince her that that’s not true, but you are not going to win.

4. The battle of mothers
If you happen to have a baby, brace yourself, your mother-in-law is coming (to teach you how to raise a child the right way). According to her, you are the Jon Snow of mothers (you know nothing) when it comes to raising a child. And you should observe and learn from her as she raised your husband just right. Your mother-in-law will always be around to tell you that you are spoiling your kids and she will throw in quite a few lessons on how to raise a child.

5. The battle of who’s the better judge
Well, the answer to that is, your mother-in-law. She is the better judge in all cases and all situations. Period. And she will remind you of that by comparing you to your sister-in-law and telling you that she knows how to cook and raise a child the right way even when you’re feeling your absolute worst.
As sour and mean as she can be, your mother-in-law has a sweet side too. She will stand by you when you need and even help you out in troubled times without ever letting you know. So keep your white flag raised whenever the sparks fly.
