Here’s What Your Baby Is Telling You

Those squeals a baby makes in its early days are adorable! We all love to hear our babies babbling. It might or might not make sense to others, but as mothers, we know what our little ones mean when they are indeed trying to tell us something.

You know when your baby is hungry. You know when he wants to be rocked to sleep. You know when he is asking for a diaper change. You know when he is looking for you or asking for attention. Here are a few things you can pretty much figure out that your baby is telling you:

In This Article

1. I am hungry, mom

If your little one is hungry, he will smack his lips, making little suckling movements even while in his sleep. He will put his little hands in his mouths if mommy doesn’t pick him up. When mommy still does not notice, he will start to wiggle and try feeling for mommy’s breast. As a last resort, your baby will begin to cry. Crying, in fact, is a late sign of hunger.

2. I’m so full

Once your baby is full, all that he wants to do is to go to sleep on your bosom. He simply wants to keep gazing at you, as if in gratitude. Your little one is so blissful with its tummy full.

3. Hold me, mother

Sometimes your baby whines for no obvious reason. He is simply looking for you. He wants you to hold him, so he is happy and comfortable. He will want to be rocked around. Your baby could be bored! So by jiggling or bouncing him around, you are stimulating him. At times all that he needs is burping.

4. What’s that out there?

Babies love to learn about the world around them. They try to point at things and ask you about all that they see out there. Talk to your little one about the objects, about how things work, about people or anything interesting around him. Your baby will invariably try to imitate you with all that cooing.

5. I need rest

Sometimes you could be over-stimulating your baby. Here’s when he will try to tell you that he does not want all those noises, sounds, or even all the mollycoddling for a while. He will yawn, hiccup or look away from you, which means that you will need to let him rest and drift off to sleep.

Your baby might also try to tell you that it’s hot, cold, frightened or excited. Although the newborn behavior seems a bit more irregular and unpredictable, you will very quickly sync in with his needs. The key is to respond promptly. For instance, if your baby is hungry and wants to suckle, but if you want to avoid because you are feeling tired or you are in public, your little one will start wailing even louder due to frustration. If you have fed your baby adequately, but he is still crying, it means that he needs to be burped.

You will need to be a keen observer right from the beginning to get the hang of your baby’s needs. The cute, confused and wrinkly facial expressions besides the body movements of your baby convey a lot to you.
