Mind Blowing Story Of Mom Pumping In ICU After Liver Transplant

When you are going to become a mother, you are full of hope and joy, praying for a safe delivery and good health for your children and your family. But destiny can sometimes play a cruel game. Only when you are hoping for the best to happen, it strikes you hard and tries to knock you down. But the real warriors are the ones who fight against all setbacks and thrive on the face of crisis. And if you happen to be a mother, you can take as many blows and still stand strong if it comes to safety and well-being of your little ones.

One such brave person who stood firm despite a major pregnancy related health issue was Melissa. She fought relentlessly for her prematurely born twins Maverick and Manning Churchill. And she still continues to prove that she is rock solid, having unwavering determination.

The to-be-mum was admitted to the hospital with a serious condition called preeclampsia that resulted in a very sharp rise in her blood pressure. It had the potential to damage her kidneys and lever [1].

She was only 22 weeks pregnant then and her condition progressed to develop into HELLP syndrome that is characterized by rupturing red blood cells, liver problems and reduced platelets. It affects 0.5 to 0.9% of all pregnancies and about 10 -20% of patients that are suffering from severe preeclampsia [2].

It was a testing time for her. After she delivered the premature twins in the 26th week, she was developing a major liver crisis. She was fighting for her own life and needed a liver transplant. Yet she decided to provide the best nutrition for her babies that would help them fight. She resolved to pump out her breast milk.

It was her sister Amanda Tilberg who created a forum on the social media that was dedicated to Melissa’s colossal efforts as a mother [3].

Amanda wrote how Melissa was admitted to the ICU, and she kept on pumping milk for her two boys even as her health was failing each moment. To make things worse, one of the children was critical. It was only hope and prayers that kept the three of them alive. Melissa was on fluids and loads of oral medications as well. In spite of such pain, she kept on refusing the pain-killers as she didn’t want any undesirable chemicals in her breastmilk. She could only think of the ways she could help her babies, who were struggling just like her.

But it was a fatal blow to her hopes when one of her twins, Maverick passed away in his mother’s arms some days ago. Manning is still fighting to beat the odds. Prayers and good wishes continue to pour in from all corners of the world.

There was also a fund-raising page that raised donations for the funeral expenses of little Maverick and it garnered a lot of support from people who stood by her in her grief.

It is sad that Melissa had to part with one of her precious babies. Yet she continues to fight for her life, and through her pain and efforts, her other child Manning is also learning to fight like his brave mama.

Isn’t it heart-breaking to read about this kind of a tragedy? But it is also immensely inspiring to see how far a mother can go to save her child and give him the best that she can, even in worst of her health. We really hope that Melissa’s struggle and the constant prayers of her family and well-wishers are answered with positivity and relief.
