Being an expecting mom, the thought of holding your baby in those arms must be getting you so excited. The time when you are eagerly looking forward to spending time with the little one and having the best memories together.

But now is also the time when those little changes in your body start to become big. The weight takes a leap, the nipples become bigger, and your baby bump starts to show. These are all positive changes and makes the experience of motherhood a more wholesome one. However, there are also some changes that may not turn out to be too desirable, and one of those is the appearance of stretch marks.

These elongated, rough streaks mostly appear when the skin has been stretched too rapidly, straining the collagen and elastin, to accommodate the baby growing inside you. They are mostly spotted on the tummy, breasts, arms, thighs, and buttocks.

Stretch marks occur naturally and sometimes even fade away with time. However, there are a few factors that determine the colour and visibility of your stretch marks. They are as follows:

1. Your Genes

Genetics have a great contribution when it comes to the appearance of stretch marks. If the maternal side of your family had it, there is a likelihood of you getting it as well. It is not that you ‘inherit’ stretch marks, but you do inherit the skin quality, elasticity and over all body constitution – all of which determines your susceptibility to stretch marks (1). In that case, you can start early interventions such as applying topical creams, lotions, and oils that will help control the appearance of stretch marks.

2. Your Age

When younger, the skin bears a smoother texture. It is way suppler and firmer and that is why when the skin is stretched beyond a point, the marks make their appearance. And when you start aging, there isn’t that much collagen and elastin to stretch and tear, therefore there is a possibility that you may get lighter or no marks, depending on additional factors. Studies also back this claim – teenage mums had more severe stretch marks when compared to their older counterparts (2).

3. Your Weight

Gaining weight during the pregnancy term is normal, but the gain should be consistent so that the body adapts to the change in weight. If the weight-gain is too drastic, your body may not be able to cope up, thus resulting in damage to the skin elasticity (3). To counter such rapid weight gain, eat nutritious food and keep a check on the portion size. Keep your body well hydrated and do prenatal exercises to keep the skin healthy and toned.

4. Occurrence Of Your Previous Stretch Marks

If you had stretch marks as a teenager, or in your previous pregnancies, you could get it in your current pregnancy as well. It is because you are prone to stretch marks. You may see the appearance of new marks as well as feel some itching or deepening of the older ones. Taking a cue from your previous marks, you can start early and take care of your skin.

Stretch marks are a common occurrence and about 90% of women get it during their lifetime. In many cases, the mothers treat it as something positive and honourable that reminds them of their experience of motherhood. But for some, it may be something undesirable in terms of body-aesthetics. In case you do want to avoid stretch marks, it will be a good idea to use some topical creams or natural moisturisers like Vitamin E and shea butter. In acute cases, you can even go for cosmetic procedures. So, don’t you worry new mommy, there are options galore. Stay stress-free!
