5 Surprising Parenting Methods: Do They Work?

The joy of holding a newborn can be compared to no other. It is an indescribable experience. Along with this overwhelming feeling of joy, comes the bigger responsibility of bringing up your child the right way. You know that you need to be there for your children through their growing years. And when they start going to school, you need to be sure that they are learning the right things, growing intellectually and getting ready to stand on their own feet to face their future.

Little things you do or say with your children around makes a lot of difference in forming their opinions and molding them into responsible adults.

Here are 5 simple parenting methods you might like to consider while raising your child.

1. Don’t Say ‘No’ Too Often

As babies grow, their curiosity about things around them increases which they like to explore and experiment. So, saying no to everything they want to do can be stifling for them. Besides, after a certain point, they might start ignoring your “No”. So it is best to reserve a no for those impossible situations. Instead of an outright no, you can say it in many different ways by adding a reason to your sentence, like – ‘Don’t touch the fan, you might get hurt’ or ‘you can use scissors when you are a little older’.

2. Treat Your Baby Like a Little Adult

Conversing in baby-talk with your children does not actually help them learn. You should talk to them like you would with an adult. This will enhance their learning process and even before they begin uttering sensible words, they would have started understanding what you speak. And as they start talking and asking questions, respond to them with patience and rationality. It is important to answer questions factually as much as possible in these tender and formative years because these conversations help children understand the perspective of things and develop their own logical reasoning capabilities.

3. Diaper Free Days

Diapers can be irritating for the baby, but most parents prefer their babies in diapers rather than having to clean them, or worse, wash their soiled clothes often. However, did you know it is healthy for babies to be diaper free? From day 1, if you keep a close watch on your baby you will notice those subtle signals your baby gives just before a poop. So, once you know when to take him/her for a pee or a poop, then the baby also learns that he/she just needs to signal you to take him/her out to clear the business. This way your baby will be potty trained faster.

4. Bite Your Baby Back

This might seem outrageous but sometimes bite your baby back, a little gently though, if he/she forms the habit of biting you when angry. This will make your baby understand that biting hurts and he/she will definitely refrain the next time he/she thinks of sinking his/her teeth into someone. Babies also usually form this habit when they are teething, as it irritates their gums. So you can consider handing them a non-toxic toy which they can bite and play with.

5. When Your Baby Throws A Tantrum, Let It Pass!

Is there one best way to bring your baby’s temper under control? Well, maybe not, especially when it happens in a public space. But what you should never do is try to pretend to throw a tantrum yourself because this may backfire as children are smart and pick up habits quickly. So this might lead them to think that it is okay to do so because – ‘mom also throws a tantrum’. A better way might be to stay calm and let the tantrum pass. Once your child is calm, talk and reason out with him/her why this is a bad idea and why he/she should not be doing this.
