Things My Mother Never Told Me - And Probably Should Have

Motherhood can be a life-altering experience for women across the world. After spending years fantasizing, anticipating, and preparing for this moment, the realization never fails to take a person’s breath away. I too was rendered speechless when my doctor called me up to tell that I was indeed pregnant.

Knowing that I was going to be a mother of a tiny tot in nine months made me excited like never before. Yes, there were jitters in my stomach. But, the enthusiasm of holding a small being – my tiny angel- in my arms overpowered every other feeling.

I sat down, took a deep breath, and tried to recollect all my thoughts. I thought of anything and everything under the sun – be it feeding, napping, or dressing him/her up. When I was pondering on whether it would be a girl or a boy, I remember making a tiny promise to myself.

I promised that if I do give birth to a beautiful baby girl, I will tell her a few things. All those things that I wished my mother would have told me but did not. Or could not. So, here goes the list!

In This Article

1. Keep Smiling, Keep Laughing

As you grow up, you will realize it too. So consider this one a head’s up. Life will give you too many reasons to cry but don’t let it ever affect your emotional well-being. Keep laughing through it all!

2. Don’t Let The Moment Pass

I know that it sounds preachy. But, please do follow this. Never ever let the moment just pass by you. Commit to it; it goes in a blink.

3. Surround Yourself With Girlfriends

At times, having a friend by your side is all that you need. Once you surround yourself with the right kind of people, you will never ever feel lonely, even if you are physically alone. You will always be assured knowing that your girlfriends are just a call away.

4. Cherish Those Unexpected Moments

More often than not, happiness knocks at your door when you least expect it to. All your friends are in love and you might be the only single person in your girl gang. But, you don’t need to go chasing anything. It will happen when it has to happen, in fact, when you least expect it too!

5. Be Yourself

Be it your friends, boyfriend, or even me, you don’t need to please anyone at the cost of being true to yourself. If one can’t seem to fathom the real ‘you’, it is not worth the effort.

6. Nothing Is Impossible

Every problem that you encounter in life will have a solution. So, when life throws you lemons, put on your gloves and apron, and prepare one tasty lemonade for yourself.

7. Respect Your Elders

My mom did tell me this one. Always show respect to your elders. Even if you disagree with them, you don’t have to be rude. If nothing else motivates you, this will. Remember, you are going to be an elder one day!

8. Happiness Is Closer Than You Think

Don’t look for happiness in people around you. Also, don’t associate your happiness with materialistic things. Joy comes from little things in life and is much closer to you than you can imagine.

9. Don’t Get Carried Away By Superficial Things

Yes, appearances do matter. But, don’t let your life revolve around that. Spend enough time on your looks to feel confident from within. However, concentrate more on how you behave with others. That is what makes a person truly beautiful.

10. Don’t Let Anyone Bring You Down

In life, there are many who will try to pull you down. Love yourself. And, believe in yourself. Don’t let anyone dictate what you know about yourself.

Another tip to keep in handy. Usually, by the time a woman realizes that her mother was right, she has a daughter who doesn’t listen to her. But don’t rebel with them. Try to keep these points in mind, and maybe, these words will help you someday!
