adult and child bmi calculator

Doctors and health experts underscore the importance of maintaining our weight in proportion to height. In fact, it is a measure to assess our well-being and take steps to avoid any complications in future. One of the most authentic measurements is the body mass index (BMI).

Q. What Is Body Mass Index?

Body mass index compares your weight with height by dividing the weight by height squared.

The calculator allows you to figure out whether you are underweight, overweight, obese or within the safe parameters. Doctors also use it to determine how appropriate an individual’s weight is for a certain age and height.

Although the BMI does not measure the fat percentage in your body, a high BMI could point at high body fatness.

Ideal Body Mass Index:

The ideal BMI is somewhere between 20 and 25.

Body Mass Index Interpretation:

• BMI < 18.5: Below normal weight

• BMI > 18.5 and < 25: Normal weight

• BMI > 25 and < 30: Overweight

• BMI > 30 and < 35: Class I Obesity

• BMI > 35 and < 40: Class II Obesity

• BMI > 40: Class III Obesity

BMI For Adults Vs. BMI For Children And Teens (two to 20 years)

The BMI for kids and adults is calculated the same way but is interpreted differently.

For children and teens, BMI is calculated based on their age and gender. It is often called BMI-for-age.

BMI for children is expressed in terms of percentile, in comparison to the BMI of children of the same age and gender.

Limitations of Body Mass Index Calculations

• The standard or average proportion is used for people of all weights and heights, even though not everyone has the same body type. The body mass varies from gender, age, and population.

• BMI for kids is not perfect. Children with a large frame can also have a high BMI as the muscle is denser than fat. A child with a petite frame can have a healthy BMI, but too much of body fat. Taller people are mostly thinner, but the larger bone mass slants their BMI to considerably larger values. The BMI can also go up during puberty.

• The ‘underweight’ and ‘overweight’ readings in the BMI calculator are predefined ‘normal’ body weight. This means that for fit people, it is better being overweight because BMI is stating they are heavier than the average people.

• The real value of BMI measurement lies in viewing them as a pattern over time. This will help both doctors and parents watch over a child’s growth and regulate if it is normal compared to other kids of same age.

BMI Percentiles For Kids

BMI percentiles show how to calculate and compare your child’s measurement with other children of the same age and gender. For instance, if a child has a BMI of 70 percentile, 70% of children of the same gender and age measured had a lower BMI.

BMI Age Percentiles For Boys (two to 20 years):

• Percentile < 5: Underweight

• Percentile > 5 and < 85: Healthy weight

• Percentile > 85 and < 95: Overweight

• Percentile > 95: Obesity

BMI Age Percentiles For Girls (two to 20 years):

• Percentile < 5: Underweight

• Percentile > 5 and < 85: Healthy weight

• Percentile > 85 and < 95: Overweight

• Percentile > 95: Obese

Health Risk Of Being Overweight

Obesity increases the possibility of the following health conditions:

• High blood pressure

• Heart diseases and stroke

• Diabetes

• Gallbladder disease and gallstones

• Gout

• Osteoarthritis

• Breathing problems like asthma and sleep apnea

Health Risk Of Being Underweight

Being underweight is often not taken seriously. People fail to realize that being underweight can pose several health risks. Some include:

• Weak immune system, making one vulnerable to cold and flu.

• Skinny people often miss vital minerals that are required for healthy body and weight. Not having enough calcium in the body can affect the bones adversely. Lack of iron can lead to anemia, making one feel lethargic and tired.

Disclaimer:

Remember, BMI is one of the many ways to assess weight but not the sole method. If you have any doubts or concerns regarding your child’s BMI, speak with your nutritionist or doctor before undergoing a new diet or fitness routine.
