Q1. “What are the earliest signs that I’m expecting?”

Well, apart from the obvious pregnancy test as your first sign, there are a few things you can take note of. They may come in handy when said pregnancy test isn’t too accurate, as it may be too soon. Some subtle signs that you could notice are fatigue, nausea, peeing more often, avoiding foods you otherwise like, morning sickness, breast swelling and/or tenderness, and of course, missing your period if you have a very regular menstruation cycle.

Q2. “Can I drink alcohol during pregnancy?”

You may wonder why this is a frequently asked question because immediately you would think, “That’s dumb, of course you can’t have alcohol!” However, contrary to popular belief, doctors have claimed that SMALL amounts of alcohol during the first half of pregnancy are allowed. The problem is that nobody has explained what that “small amount” is, as there is no safe level, which is why it is advised to avoid alcohol altogether.

Q3. “Can I sleep on my back during my pregnancy?”

It’s been recommended for you NOT to sleep on your back because the spinal cord has 2 major blood vessels called the vena cava and the aorta, which could be compromised. When you lie down on your back, the vessels receive pressure from the position, which then decreases the blood flow to and from the uterus. This can result in you feeling faint and lightheaded, which has been the case for many women. “A tilt to one side or the other” is preferred while sleeping.

Q4. “Why is smoking dangerous during pregnancy?”

You must know this is a frequently asked and you must know why smoking is dangerous especially for pregnant women, which is why we’re reiterating the answer. First and second hand smoking can cause prenatal complications and your baby may weigh less than normal because of carbon monoxide poisoning and reduced oxygen. You must ensure that you aren’t around any smokers while pregnant.

Q5. “Can I exercise during pregnancy?”

Of course you can and you must! It’s recommended to do 30 to 45 minutes of aerobic exercise a few times a week. However, try to ensure that your heart rate is less than 140 beats/minute. However, after around 18 weeks of pregnancy, avoid activities that have a high impact.

Q6. “Can I get in the hot tub or sauna during pregnancy?”

Getting straight to the point, the answer is no, you should not get in the hot tub or sauna while pregnant. They increase your core body temperature, which is dangerous for your baby’s development. Tub baths on the other hand are perfectly fine.

Q7. “Is it safe to have sex when pregnant?”

Yes, it is. It’s safe throughout the whole pregnancy EXCEPT right up until delivery. Obviously. So don’t worry and don’t freak out because you will not hurt your baby. Here’s why: the amniotic sac, uterus, and the mucus plug in the cervix are all there to protect your baby. However, some women may be advised against sex if they have a risk of premature labour, if they have vaginal bleeding, or if they have placenta previa, which is when the placenta is too close to the cervix.
