10 Fun Pumpkin Crafts And Activities For Kids

Finally, it’s fall, one of the most favorite times of the year! There’s a slight nip in the air, the leaves have turned red, and the pumpkins are available in plenty. The abundance of pumpkins calls for some activities and crafts to do with your little ones. Here are ten pumpkin crafts and activities that you can enjoy with your children this autumn.

Pumpkin Crafts For Preschoolers And Kids

1. Mini Pumpkin Hunt:

You Will Need:

  • Real or mini plastic pumpkins

How To:

  1. Hide a few small pumpkins in the backyard or garden. Leaf piles are great spots for hiding pumpkins.
  1. Gather the kids outdoors and assign each of them 20 minutes to find the pumpkin.
  1. The child who gets the most number of pumpkins will be the winner.

2. Pumpkin Picking:

How To:

  1. Take the kids to a nearby pumpkin patch.
  1. Now tell the children to search for pumpkins in all shapes and sizes. Give each kid a basket to collect the pumpkins. Give them 20 to 30 minutes to complete the task.
  1. Now have the kids try to guess the weight of the largest and smallest pumpkin.

  1. Give each kid a pumpkin to do the carving. Assign a time limit to this task. 30 to 40 minutes would be enough.
  1. Children have to carve and decorate their pumpkin within 30 to 40 minutes. They are free to make their designs and patterns. Tip- To keep the cut out of the mouth and eyes from drying out, tell the kids to apply some petroleum jelly.

  • Large sized pumpkins
  • Knife
  • A drinking glass
  • Flora of your choice like cattails, dried wheat, or small flowers with colorful leaves
  • Paint or stickers

How To:

  1. Give your kid a large sized pumpkin.
  1. Now tell him to cut a hole at the top of the pumpkin and scoop out its content. If your child is too young, then you do this task for him.
  1. Now ask your kid to decorate the pumpkin any way he likes. He can use paint or stickers for decorating the pumpkin.
  1. Have your kid place a drinking glass or a small jar inside the pumpkin and fill it with water.

  • Large sized pumpkins
  • Old clothes
  • Straw and hay
  • Markers

How To:

  1. Assemble the kids in the backyard and garden.
  1. Now divide them into teams and tell each team to make a scarecrow using the supplies and within the assigned time. Kids have to use the pumpkin as the scarecrow’s head.
  1. Reward the team that makes the best scarecrow.

6. Pumpkin Paper Bag:

  • Newspaper
  • Rubber band or string
  • Paper lunch bag
  • Orange and green acrylic or tempera paint
  • Black marker
  • Paintbrush

  1. Tell your kid to crumple the newspaper and stuff the paper lunch bag until it is two-thirds full.
  1. Now tell him to close the bag with a rubber band or string.
  1. Now have him twist the unstuffed part of the paper bag to make it look like a stem.

  • Masking tape
  • 5 to 10 small and dried gourds
  • 1 to 2 small, round pumpkins

  1. Gather the children outdoors.
  1. Now set up the gourds in line, vertically, just like the bowling pins.
  1. Stick a masking tape on the ground to make the starting line. The starting line should not be very far from the gourds, as the pumpkins will not roll far.
  1. Now tell the kids to take turns at rolling the pumpkin down the gourds.

8. Pumpkin Seed Art:

You Will Need:

  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Scrap paper in different colors
  • Acrylic paints in two different colors
  • Pencil
  • Plastic bag

  1. Pour the acrylic paint in different bags and put the seeds in them.
  1. Now tell your kid to squeeze the bags so that the seeds get a proper coat of color.
  1. After the seeds are colored, take them out on a wax paper to dry.
  1. Now tell the kids to do a freehand drawing on the scrap paper. They can make anything like a tree, flowers and so on.
  1. After drawing, tell them to apply glue on areas they would like to stick the pumpkin seeds.

9. Pompom Pumpkin:

You Will Need:

  • Orange colored pompom in various sizes
  • Green or olive colored felt
  • A small twig
  • A wire cutter
  • Scissor
  • Hot glue gun

How To:

  1. Tell your child to cut 2-inch pieces of the twig for the stems.
  1. Now tell him to trace and cut the leaf shape from the felt.
  1. Apply hot glue to the twig and insert it inside the pompom. Tell your kid to hold for a few seconds so that the glue sets.
  1. Now tell your teen to apply a little bit of hot glue to one end of the leaf and paste it just beside the stem. Hold the leaf for a few seconds so that it sets. The pumpkin pompom is ready! This is one of the simple and easy pumpkin crafts for toddlers.

10. Paper Strip Pumpkin:

You Will Need:

  • Orange and green construction paper
  • Brass fasteners
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Paper
  • Hole punch

How To:

  1. Tell your child to cut 12 same sized strips from the orange construction paper.
  1. Punch a hole on each end of the paper strips.
  1. Now tell him to stack the pieces on top of each other.
  1. Put a brass fastener through the holes in all the strips.
  1. Now put another brass pin through the other holes on the other end of the strips.
  1. Make a U shape and then fan them out to make a ball.
  1. Cut out a leaf from the green construction paper and glue to the top of the pumpkin.
