The Back Story

A man found a home-based pregnancy test kit in his bathroom, one that belonged to his ex girlfriend, which was unused. While it was just sitting there on the cabinet, an idea hit him. He thought he would actually take the test, just for fun! At least we’re assuming and hoping it was just for his mere amusement. Little did we know it’s actually a very, very good thing that he took the test, but we’ll get into this in detail later into the story.

So, after he took the pregnancy test, he obviously wasn’t expecting it to be positive. And guess what? It was positive! If you’re shocked then imagine the guy himself. Bet you’re wondering how this is possible. But don’t worry, you’ll soon find out, just keep reading.

The guy speaks to his pal about this extremely confusing, bizarre, and strange phenomena who finds it extremely hilarious. He found it so funny that he turned his experience into a comical version and made it online on Reddit! Naturally, as is the case with the Internet, things can go viral in a matter of a few minutes. Now that the comic is all over the Internet, it obviously led to plenty of comments and even some important revelations.

What The Positive Test Meant

Thanks to all the comments and of course, people of the Internet, it was observed that pregnancy test was positive because of something very serious – a health condition. So essentially, trying to be funny and taking a pregnancy test saved this guy’s life. Viewers of the comic were quick to point this out: “If this is true, you should check yourself for testicular cancer. Seriously. Google it.” Another person said, “You may have testicular cancer! Get to an oncologist, tell them you took a pregnancy test and it came out positive.”

After visiting the doctor, the guy realised he did in fact have a little lump. Here’s why the test was positive: “Pregnancy tests detect beta human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone in the blood and the urine produced by the developing placenta. Experts say beta hCG can also signal testicular cancer.” A genitourinary oncologist Dr. Mark Pomerantz said, “It turns out a fair number of testicular cancers make the same exact hormone.”

So apparently home pregnancy tests can detect testicular cancer because what was being thought of as a joke led to a man getting medical help before it got too late. However, please remember pregnancy tests can’t detect it in all instances, but if you do happen to take one and it comes out as positive, go to your doctor. It is not as if you (men) would normally rush to take a pregnancy test.

The first sign of testicular cancer is usually a painless lump. Dr. Christopher Wood, professor and deputy chairman of urology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston stated, “It’s typically spotted by the guy himself. We recommend men do self-exam in the shower once a month to make sure there aren’t any major changes.”

So guys, you know what to do! And no, we don’t necessarily mean take a pregnancy test.
