When you are about to have a baby, you do expect a fair amount of symptoms to show up. Be it the lower back pain or the unwelcome morning sickness. But then, there are symptoms that completely catch you by surprise. One of these symptoms is the change in vision. After all, for most women, there are far more pressing pregnancy discomforts to be bothered about other than a slight decline in their vision sharpness.
However, the fact that your vision isn’t as sharp as it used to be earlier might become pretty annoying, as well as confusing, with time. But, most of these issues are temporary and minor. And, the vision returns to its normal self soon after the birth of the little one, on its own. It is said that these changes are usually brought about by the physical and hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy (1).
However, there are other problems associated with pregnancy that can also cause issues with vision. And, these may require some medical attention too. Here, we are going to discuss some of these problems that you might want to look out for:
1. Dry Eyes
You might notice that your eyes have suddenly become drier than normal. In fact, if you wear contact lenses, this condition might even make it more irritating. What you can do is use artificial tears so as to make your eyes wet, which might help ease the dryness. If you wear contact lenses, you can check the label to ensure whether you can use drops with them. This is because some preservatives present in the eye drops might harm the contacts. Also, whenever you are using any drops, consult your doctor to ensure that the ingredients pose no harm to expecting moms (2).
2. Blurred Vision
Most of the expecting moms experience fluid retention. One of the most common side effects for the same is the change in shape and thickness of the cornea. Thus, it results in distorted vision. These changes disappear on their own soon after delivery, or at times, after breastfeeding. You may not have to do anything in such a scenario, especially if the distorted vision is not bothering you so much. But, if it is, you can always seek an appointment with your doctor. If you already wear glasses, you may have to change your prescription. Since your eyes go back to normal after childbirth, most doctors may advise against fitting of new contacts (3).
Small blood vessels, which supply blood to the retina, can get damaged due to blood sugar levels that are associated with diabetes. And, this becomes more and more likely as the expecting moms move further along their pregnancy. In fact, there is a form of diabetes known as gestational diabetes that is temporary and affects only pregnant women. This can also cause blurred vision among moms-to-be. So, if you already have diabetes, continue monitoring it throughout the pregnancy. And, if it is gestational diabetes that you have, ensure that it does not get too high. Be in touch with your doctor regarding the same. He/she will be able to help you in the best possible way (4).
Though this happens rarely, change in vision can also be a sign of some potentially serious medical issue – preeclampsia. An indication of damage to some other organ and high blood pressure are some of the symptoms that mark this more severe problem. This can cause some pregnant women to temporarily lose vision. Other signs include blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and seeing spots or flashing lights. If you notice any of these signs, rush to the doctor immediately (5).
Now that you are aware of all the possible reasons that may cause vision changes during pregnancy, you’ll know what to do if such a situation arises. And, that is what matters. Believe in yourself and everything will be alright, mommies. Wish you loads of luck!
