Origin, Meaning, And History Of Edgar

Edgar is a popular given name in England, derived from the Anglo-Saxon moniker Eadgar, which comprises ead meaning “rich, prosperous” and gar meaning “spear”. It was seldom used during the late medieval era, like most Anglo-Saxon names, before regaining popularity a few centuries later.

One of the well-known early bearers of this name was Edgar the Peaceful, who ruled England from 959 until his passing in 975. He was the son of King Edmund I and his first wife Ælfgifu. While there were significant changes in the theological domain, the English Benedictine Reform, which he actively supported, became a dominating religious and social force. Edgar largely adhered to the political policies of his predecessors. This was accompanied by a literary and artistic flowering, primarily linked to Æthelwold, Bishop of Winchester, which historians view as a remarkable accomplishment.

However, the name started diminishing in popularity after the Norman invasion, as Norman French spoken by the aristocracy began influencing the Middle English spoken at the time. The name began coming back in use in the 18th century, partly because of a novel by Walter Scott titled The Bride of Lammermoor. The story revolved around Edgar Ravenswood and Lucy Ashton, who fell in love with each other.

Ed, Eddie, and Eddy are the diminutives, while Edgard, Edgardo, Edgars, and Edgaras are some of the variants in other languages and cultures.
A fictional character named Edgar Linton appears in Emily Bronte’s 1847 book Wuthering Heights. He assumes the role of Catherine Earnshaw’s husband in the narrative. Due to his tender, kind, loving, gentle, and weak disposition in contrast to Heathcliff’s violent, despotic nature, he serves as Heathcliff’s antithesis as a character.

From Shakespeare’s play King Lear, Edgar is Lear’s godson and the legal heir to the Earl of Gloucester. He is said to be an upright man who values Edmund, his younger half-brother.

Edgar’s Zodiac Sign As Per Western Astrology

Western astrology includes the construction of a horoscope based on the person’s exact time of birth and location to understand the positions of the planet, stars, and zodiac signs at that time. However, in popular culture, it is often narrowed down to the sun sign, which depends on the person’s birth date. There are 12 zodiac signs, each having dominant traits, planetary rulers, elemental connection, and more.

Zodiac sign or Sun sign

The Earth’s orbit around the sun is divided into 12 zodiac signs covering 30-degree sectors. According to Western astrology, the zodiac or sun sign depends on the sun’s position in one of these sectors at the time of your birth. Starting from the sun’s position at the March equinox, the chart goes anti-clockwise from Aries, followed by Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. These signs are ruled by planetary bodies - Mars, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Furthermore, they are categorized into triplicities or elemental signs - fire, water, air, and earth - that govern their characteristics. Each of these zodiac signs features certain personality traits that may determine how a person presents themselves.

Why the date of birth matters

Each zodiac sign in Western astrology is linked to a specific range of dates in the year. Unlike Vedic astrology, where names can sometimes be used to infer astrological details, Western astrology relies entirely on the birth date.
