The name Jonna is of Hebrew origin and is the Scandinavian version of the Hebrew and Biblical name ‘Johanna.’ In Hebrew, the ‘Jo’ in Jonna refers to ‘God,’ which means ‘Yahweh (God) is gracious’ or ‘Yahweh is merciful.’ It is also known to be the female variant of Jon, which means ‘God has given.’

According to the Bible, Johanan, the son of Joiada, was one of the high priests in Jerusalem. He became the fifth high priest in the temple of Jerusalem after it was rebuilt by the Jews following their return from the Babylonian captivity.
