Origin, Meaning, And History Of Megaera

Megaera is a feminine name of Greek origin, derived from the word megaira, meaning ‘to grudge.’ It can also mean ‘the jealous one’ because of its association with ancient Greek mythology. Megaera is the name of one of the Furies or the Eumenides, ancient Greek goddesses residing in the underworld. Also known as the Erinyes, Megaera, Allecto, and Tisiphone were children of Hades or Pluto, the god of the underworld, and Nyx or Nox, the goddess of the night. However, some sources say they were born from the union of air and Mother Earth, making them far older than any of the Olympian deities (1).

Megaera is typically pronounced as meh-GAY-rah, with its only known variant being Megaira. This variant maintains the same underlying meaning and history. However, the name is often confused with Megara, the name of Greek hero Heracles’ wife. Megaera makes intriguing appearances in various forms of contemporary fiction. In the 1964 Hammer horror film The Gorgon, her presence resurfaces in a Central European village around 1910. Additionally, she features in the Twilight Zone episode Ye Gods, where she is portrayed as the genuine love interest of Cupid, offering a unique twist on her mythological origins.

Megaera is also a part of the video game Hades, where she is one of the three romanceable characters. Her only known non-Fury depiction is in George Bernard Shaw’s 1912 play Androcles and the Lion, wherein Megaera is the name of Androcles’ wife.

Although Megaera is not commonly used as a name for baby girls, it does have some usage as the name of an asteroid, 464 Megaera. It is also the name of three Royal Navy ships, the HMS Megaera of 1783, 1837, and 1849. Thus, despite its rarity, Megaera is seen as a distinctive name, making it a fascinating choice for anyone seeking a title with an ancient appeal.
