Dr. Joseph Garcia, famously called the ‘Grandfather of Baby Sign Language,’ has been a pioneer in improving parent/infant communication since 1988. Over the years, he has been helping parents and caregivers communicate with their infants beyond ‘Eat, More, and Milk.’ Dr. Garcia created a practical method for parents to learn more signs. He has authored several books, the prominent one being Dr. Joseph’s Fingerspelling Book, which makes learning to read a game-like activity. Following his military service, Dr. Garcia worked with the Deaf community and physicians to develop a comprehensive ASL medical dictionary and an online course in diagnostic medical communication in American Sign Language. He regularly consults with hospitals, health care providers, and educational institutions on using sign language as an effective method of communication.
