Hi, My Name Is Mom & I Can’t Even Remember Who I Was Before That

Being a mom is a full-time job and those of you who do not agree, you are probably not mothers yet. The life of a mother is filled with sacrifices. A life where everyone’s needs come before yours and that’s unlikely to change over a lifetime. You choose to be a mother and that’s a choice you make for life. A typical day in a mother’s life looks something like this. You wake up, take care of everyone around you, plan who needs what for the next day, perhaps get some thankless comments and behavior from your kids, go to sleep. Wake up the next day, only to have the same thing happen over and over again. Sound familiar?

Being a mother is a blessing, no doubt. But once you’re a mother, there is no going back. No going back to being anything else. You’re a mother and you respond to ma, mamma, mommy and you might have even forgotten your name. Because being a mother is your priority now and you gladly accept that.

Remember when you were younger and had big dreams for your life? You wanted to graduate college, go on to work in a big company, perhaps even start your own business. The idea of being a mother lingered on somewhere but little did you know that it would become a priority in your life. You had goals to achieve, milestones to cross. You envisioned a life filled with adventure, hustle, and a successful career.

Now, you are a woman who has graduated college, become the CEO of a company, or even started your own business. You’ve even had the time to cross some of your personal milestones. But you are a mother first. Before everything else. It is a choice you made wholeheartedly and you are glad you did. Now your life revolves around your family. You cook for them, dress them up, clean up the house, take care of their well being, help them with their homework, put them to sleep, and then hit the bed. Exhausted.

You close your eyes and just when you fall asleep, your little kid comes running to you because they had a bad dream. You hug them, comfort them, and put them to sleep. You assure them that they are safe. They insist you sleep next to them and you do. You want your kids to feel safe and have a good night’s rest. You are now living a life filled with adventure and hustle just like you wanted but the difference is that it does not pertain just to you. It now encompasses your family and their success.

Lost And Tired But Fulfilled

Being a mother is a full-time job but it is not considered as a career. So, it does not get the appreciation and value that it deserves. It is normal to feel lost and tired. Sometimes, you even get lonely when days and weeks go by where you’ve not had any adult interaction besides your partner.

It is easy to feel lost, tired, and overwhelmed when you’re a mother. It is hard. It takes a lot of dedication, commitment, and sacrifice. But it’s a choice you made. A choice you do not regret. But sometimes, you do wish that someone had given you a heads up. You wish that you had some time for yourself, a little time to relax and a little alone time. Perhaps a few hours to read your favorite book by a window where you can feel the rays of the sun? Sounds nice. Um, sounds like a dream.

While this might not be possible always and motherhood is a tough choice, certain moments make it worth it. When your kid kisses you, hugs you tight, and tells you what a great mother you are, makes you a card with all the glitter and sequence they’ve ever known, and other such moments are the ones you live for. These moments make every other rough one worth it. These are the moments that remind you of why you chose motherhood. They make you feel grateful and happy. Most importantly, they make you feel fulfilled.
