Beware! These 5 Body Parts Might Hurt During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is indeed a wonderful time. To have a life grow inside you is not something that words can do justice. But as wonderful as it may be, it came with truckloads of (read: painful) surprises for me! Yes, my body went through a lot of changes – it grew out in places (my feet could be confused with that of Big Foot’s, I swear!), then there was the morning sickness and the occasional visitor: the belly ache. And even though I was well-prepared for all of these, I was certainly taken aback by the numerous aches and pains I felt in body parts I never knew would (and in some places I never knew feeling pain was at all possible).

1. My feet

Since I was the first one among all my cousins and friends to get pregnant, nobody was there to tell me that not only would my feet grow double their size, but also they would hurt! Towards the last trimester of my pregnancy, my feet became sore from carrying all that extra weight and pained quite a bit even when I wasn’t walking. The soreness in my feet and ankles made it difficult to put even socks on.

2. My head

As soon as my first trimester and the second was about to begin, I developed this nasty headache that I’m pretty sure one could only get if they were watching one of the episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Since I never used to get so many headaches before, these came as a total surprise to me. I guess pregnancy hormones mixed with stress create a deadly cocktail for your head.

3. My kidneys

The pain in my kidneys made me realize that Rachel from Friends was right all along. Babies do treat your bladder like a chew toy. And when my bladder had to work so hard all the time, my kidneys went into overdrive, giving rise to this dull ache, which I honestly at first, had confused with back pain. Unfortunately, I had to go through kidney stones during the second trimester of my pregnancy.

4. My bellybutton

Now I know a lot of you will raise your eyes in disbelief at this, but trust me even I never knew that my bellybutton was capable of feeling any sort of sensation, let alone pain! Since my tummy was stretching and growing as my baby grew, so did my navel and hence, started the pain. Nonetheless, my OBGYN told me not to worry about it after I panicked and called her at 3am in the morning since I hadn’t found even a single mention of it in the several pregnancy books I had read.

5. My hips

I know. This is something I should have expected since the majority of the weight of the baby is supported by the hips, but the intensity with which it affected me was not something I was even remotely expecting. No matter what I did, my hips hurt all the time. When I tried to sit, they hurt. When I got up, they hurt. When I rolled over in bed, they hurt. Heck, sometimes they hurt even when I was asleep! And this just became worse as I grew bigger.

Some of the other sensations I never expected to go through during pregnancy was how my hands got numb, and the major leg cramps I had to go through. The miracle of birthing sure has a dark side that nobody talks about. But at the end, when that little monster wraps its fingers around yours, it all feels worth it.
