When couples try to conceive, they may come face to face with a wide range of circumstances, which make it a complicated process. In the event of an obstacle, doctors state various reasons that could be responsible for infertility. They can vary from alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking to illnesses and ailments. Amongst the plethora of risks, obesity doesn’t naturally come up as a big issue. However, it is something that couples should keep in mind when they decide to have a baby.

Putting on too much weight is a significant problem for conceiving, regardless of your gender. Studies suggest that being obese can impact the way a male body organically releases hormones (1).

In the case of women, obesity negatively impacts the frequency of their ovulation. This results in irregular periods and affects their egg-production abilities. Women in this position are more likely to face miscarriage and might need to use in vitro fertilisation for getting pregnant.

Pregnancy Is Still A Possibility

While it has its own set of qualms, being obese does not necessarily mean that pregnancy is impossible. Women who are planning to give birth can choose to adopt a healthier lifestyle. This can include eating smaller but nutritious meals, monitoring periods and ovulation, and following a workout routine to shed the excess weight.

Some doctors recommend getting in touch with a fertility specialist in case a couple has attempted to get pregnant and had difficulties for up to six months. Every woman who is trying to conceive must get a check-up done for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to determine whether there is a presence of cysts in their ovaries that may be hindering ovulation.

If they are facing issues with polycystic ovary syndrome, chances are that their weight is too much and it is quite challenging to get rid of. Since imbalanced insulin is a leading cause of this syndrome, it is always a good idea to visit a doctor and inquire about ways to normalize insulin levels.

Angela Grassi, a dietician who also lives with the syndrome, said, “The more weight you gain, the more corresponding insulin your body produces, and the more you continue to gain weight (2).” Hence, women in such a condition should try to maintain a healthy exercising routine that would help to reduce weight and take care of the hormonal imbalances.

But, don’t worry. Obese women can still conceive with a smooth pregnancy and give birth to a healthy baby. Make sure to keep an eye on your vitamins, especially vitamin D and folate, and consume a healthy diet while pregnant.

Developing a healthy regime and attaining desired fitness levels is a long process. It involves being mindful of what you’re eating and the consistency of your workout routine. In addition to that, mental well-being is also imperative for your overall growth. Both you and your partner can engage in an active lifestyle, where you say no to junk food or lazing on the couch and instead go out for walks, follow a nutritious diet, or take that flight of stairs by ditching the elevator for work. Even the slightest of movements throughout the day will work wonders for your body, so keep moving! When you are conscious of these aspects, everything concerning your fitness will follow suit.

While fighting your battles with weight, there could be several concerns crossing your mind. But, there is no need to be disheartened about conceiving. Just make sure you’re on the right track to fitness, and take one step at a time.
