Dealing with a miscarriage can be an extremely painful and hard time for any woman. The sudden realization that the fetus is no more can take a major hit on the emotional health of most mothers, causing them to grieve the loss of their baby for several weeks to months. A miscarriage can occur anywhere between the first 20 weeks of gestation. And the statistics show that about 15-20% of all known pregnancies will end in a miscarriage (1). This number can be considered fairly high or fairly low depending on how one looks at it.
Miscarriage is also one of the reasons why many couples choose to keep the news of their pregnancy under wraps until the third trimester. And while most of us would understand and respect the need for privacy for some couples during such trying times, celebrities often have to bear the brunt of the media since they are constantly under public scrutiny. And that’s probably one of the many reasons why most celebrities choose not to talk about it even if it had happened to them. However, there are a few who came forward and shared their experiences, helping others to cope with it. Let’s take a look at the 5 celebrities who opened up about their miscarriages:
Kajol recently opened up about dealing with multiple miscarriages before giving birth to her two kids, Nysa and Yug. The actress was pregnant while shooting for K3G, but her pregnancy terminated around the same time as the movie’s release. Talking about the same, Kajol revealed how she was in a hospital at the time, and despite the movie doing well, she was going through a sad phase. In an interview, Ajay Devgn also revealed that since it was an ectopic pregnancy, it was a danger to Kajol’s life and they had to make a decision right away. But thankfully, everything worked out for the actress, and she is now a proud mom to two wonderful kids, Nysa and Yug.
2. Gauri Khan
Not many people know that Shahrukh Khan and Gauri dealt with the loss of a baby before the couple welcomed their first child, Aryan. In 1997, Gauri Khan experienced a troubled pregnancy which ultimately led to a miscarriage. Shah Rukh Khan further revealed that they both wanted their first baby to be a girl, but then they had Suhana as their second child. In 2013, the couple welcomed their third child AbRam via surrogacy, with the 7-year-old being the youngest of their three children.
3. Kiran Rao
Another couple who had to cope with the loss of a baby is Kiran Rao and her husband, Aamir Khan. The Bollywood screenwriter/producer has always been vocal about her journey through pregnancy, including the IVF cycles that she went through. The Bollywood actor was once quoted as urging everyone to give them time to heal as the couple had gone through a miscarriage. In the same statement, the actor said how the past two months have been tough for them. The duo now has an 8-year-old son who was born through IVF surrogacy.
4. Shilpa Shetty
The most recent celebrity to open up about her experience with miscarriage is Shilpa Shetty. The Bollywood actress became the proud mom of a baby girl named Samisha earlier this year. Announcing the birth of their daughter, the couple said that they had opted for surrogacy. In a recent interview, the 45-year-old revealed that she had miscarried a couple of times as she suffers from an autoimmune disease called APLA. The actress further stated how she wanted a second child for the longest time and had even tried adoption, and after three failed attempts of surrogacy, she had almost given up.
5. Ankita Bhargava Patel
In 2018, television actor Karan Patel and Ankita Bhargava were all set to embrace parenthood for the first time. However, Ankita suffered a miscarriage 4 months into her pregnancy. The couple who were very much excited about this new phase of lives were saddened by the incident and released an official statement to respect their need for privacy around the time. But soon enough the couple bounced back with a positive attitude and decided to try again. In December 2019, the couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl. Karan further revealed that they would like to have another child since both of them are the only child and understand the need for a sibling.
Miscarriage is an unfortunate incident that many couples face in their lives. And being a public figure, it definitely takes courage and strength to openly talk about it. The above couples have truly shown us that one can have a traumatic experience and choose to move on in their life and succeed at their dream of starting a family with strength, hope, and perseverance.
