Developing due to a number of factors such as gland disorders, pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss, muscle wear and tear due to gymming, stretch marks can be stubborn, to say the least (1). Even though they tone down from their bright red/purple hue to light pink shade as time passes by, getting rid of them is not easy (2). Or at least making them as less visible as possible.

However, as they say ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way.’ And I was determined to get rid of the stretch marks my body developed after the birth of my son. After much research, I devised a careful plan to reduce stretch marks and it actually worked for me! So I thought of sharing it with you, thinking it might just work for you too!

Here are 5 things I did daily to ensure my stretch marks were barely visible-

1. Exercise

Yep, one of the first things I did is rejoin my gym. Stretch marks actually appear when the skin shrinks or stretches rapidly, which causes the collagen in your skin to tear (3). Now, one of the best ways to boost collagen production is to improve blood flow to the various parts of your body, which can be done by exercising (4). That is why I rejoined my gym and ensured I went daily. If you’re not a gym member, don’t worry. Just exercise at home daily and that’ll do you good too! 30 minutes of walk or any physical exercise will help improve blood circulation.

2. Bio Oil

Did you know that women all over the world actually recommend Bio Oil as the best stretch marks treatment? I found out that it’s the number one selling anti-stretch marks product in more than 100 nations and has won plenty of skincare awards for the same (5). Studies back it too (6). And most of my friends have also raved about it, so I was like why not? I used it twice daily for about 10-12 weeks on affected areas and trust me, I could actually see the difference!

3. Vitamin A

Also known as retinoid, Vitamin A greatly contributes to lending a youthfulness to skin and can help in fading out stretch mark scars as I found out (7). To get my daily dose of vitamin A, I did not want to rely on supplements or even chemical, topical creams for that matter. So I resorted to eating lots of carrots and sweet potatoes, alternating between the two so I wouldn’t get bored or sick of one of them. I also cooked them in various ways to keep the variety alive.

4. An overall healthier diet

I guess what most of us new moms don’t know is that diet can actually help in fading stretch marks to a considerable extent. I didn’t know about it either until I read about it (8). But once I did, there was no turning back! Foods that contain vitamins such as C, D, and E along with protein and zinc help in boosting skin health. This part was easiest to follow and I made sure I got plenty of unprocessed sources of these vitamins and minerals in my diet like eggs, berries etc.

5. Aloe vera gel

Lastly, I included something I’ve always had on my dressing table in my daily routine – aloe vera gel. Since it’s a known remedy for skin problems and is also a skin softener, I used it every night on cleansed skin. However, I made sure I used pure plant extract instead of pre-packaged gels.

So that’s it! That’s all I did to get rid of stretch marks and 8 weeks on, it has really worked! I think the process sped up because I used Bio Oil. That thing is really effective! So if you want to minimize your stretch marks as well, give this routine a shot!
