1. Lifting Heavy Objects

Medical health professionals, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, suggest that pregnant women must refrain from lifting heavy objects. While performing your household chores, you might want to rearrange furniture or move certain items away. It is best to avoid doing this and ask someone else to do it for you instead. Research suggests that women who lift or carry heavy objects during pregnancy are at a higher risk for preterm delivery, miscarriages, and injury (1).

2. Using Harsh Chemicals To Clean The House

Cleaning some areas in your house will require the use of harsh chemicals. Sometimes, you may also need chemicals and sprays to terminate bugs, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and even rats. Most of these household chemicals are hazardous for pregnant women and babies. Inhaling these poisonous chemicals can put you and your baby at risk, so avoid using them. Instead, you can opt for eco-friendly or green cleaning products. Certain natural and readily available products such as lemon juice, vinegar, and baking soda are incredibly beneficial and safe for cleaning, so opt for these products instead of your regular chemical-based products (2).

3. Cleaning Pets And Disposing Litter

When cleaning your pet, you may be exposed to certain parasites or germs. Pregnancy can alter your immune system, so it is best to refrain from cleaning your pet during this time. Reach out for help, ask someone else to do it, or sign up for a professional pet cleaning service. Also, pregnant women should steer clear of cleaning after their pets, particularly cats. It has been found that cat litter may contain a parasite known as Toxoplasma Gondii, which can cause complications for both mother and baby. If you have come in contact with pet litter, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly. If you absolutely must clean your pet or dispose of their litter by yourself, wear a face mask and use a pair of gloves. Sanitize as usual once you are done (3).

4. Changing Curtains Or Cleaning Ceiling Fans

Specific tasks such as changing curtains or cleaning the ceiling fan will require you to climb up a chair or stool. During pregnancy, your center of gravity changes, which causes you to be more prone to slip and fall. Climbing chairs and stools can be extremely dangerous during this time, as you may not have the best control and grip. Pregnant women are also asked to avoid ladders as they can prove fatal if they lose balance and fall (4).

5. Painting Your House

It is natural to be excited about the newborn’s arrival, and so is the urge to do up your house. You’re probably dreaming of painting your baby’s bedroom and working on a complete makeover. However, paints can be hazardous for both you and your baby during this time. If you are hell-bent on the idea of getting your baby’s room painted and ready, hire professional painters instead of doing yourself. Also, wait a few days until the room is dry before you enter inside (5).

6. Tasks That Require You To Stand Too Long

It is best to avoid tasks requiring you to stand for long periods. For example, if you are cooking a dish that is bound to take time, ensure that you take breaks in between by sitting or lying down. Similarly, if you need to clean the house, do so with breaks in between. Standing for extended periods during pregnancy is associated with preterm delivery, miscarriage, injury, and discomfort (6).

7. Tasks That Require You To Bend Or Squat

Specific tasks such as sweeping or mopping the floor may require you to bend down. Since your center of gravity has changed, bending can put you at risk of a fall or cause unnecessary pain and pressure on your body. If you experience any discomfort while sweeping, mopping, or cleaning the house while bending, it is best to stop immediately. Also, avoid using a mop cloth that needs you to squat and bend completely while wiping the floor. Instead, use a mopping stick or vacuum cleaner with regular breaks (7).

We do not deny that household chores are necessary. In fact, they are a brilliant way to keep yourself active and engaged. However, you need to be mindful of the chores mentioned above so you and your baby don’t fall into harm’s way. What are your thoughts on this? Were you asked not to do these chores when pregnant too?
