It is highly recommended that you have sex closer to your time of ovulation. This is because the egg is closer to the fallopian tube making it more likely to fuse with the sperm upon entry into the vagina. Ovulation period lasts only for five days in a month, and so it is important to track it to increase the likelihood of conception. The sperm can live in the body for five days and so, have sex closer to the fertile window with the 12 to 24 hours before ovulation for successful fertilization.

Track ovulation

Ovulation occurs on the 14th day of a 28-day menstrual cycle. You can keep an alarm on your phone and download a tracker to keep track of this period. You can also use an ovulation predictor kit or basal thermometer. Some physical changes to observe during this period are:

  • Vaginal discharge, which is clear and slippery
  • Increased sexual urges and fantasies
  • Cervix will be centrally aligned
  • Tenderness of breasts
  • Spotting with a dull pain in the lower abdomen

2. Try having sex missionary or doggy style

While little to no information is available on how sex poses help in conception, it has been said that the missionary and doggy poses are ideal for conception as the route through the vagina for the sperm to reach the egg is closer.

Nevertheless, you do not have to stop enjoying your favorite sex positions as every pose has its own efficiency.

03. Avoid aspirins and steroids

Certain medications can make it more difficult for women to conceive. Women are recommended to visit a doctor while planning for a baby, if they consume the following types of medication.

  • Chemotherapy
  • Neuroleptic medicines
  • Spironolactone
  • Testosterone
  • Anabolic steroids
  • Male reproductive organ drugs
  • Any form of psychological or psychiatric drugs
  • Medication for fungal infections

4. Quit smoking, drinking and caffeine

If only having a baby was as easy as it is in movies where binge drinking is shown. The increase of alcohol in the body actually thins blood leading to erections being short-lived, and for women, the chances of conceiving are decreased. If you wish to conceive, both partners should stop alcohol consumption. This will increase their chances of conception.

However, do not increase your caffeine consumption to compensate for alcohol. It’s best to stick to juices and water instead. You may limit caffeine to two cups a day.

It is best to quit smoking during the time of conception not only for better chances of conception but also to ensure a healthy child.
