The feeling of holding your baby for the first time is one that cannot be described in words! That warmth, that closeness is unparalleled. And so is the softness of your newborn’s delicate skin. It’s so hard to get your hands off it, isn’t it?
Every time I hold my daughter in my arms, I can’t help but marvel at how soft and smooth her skin is! And naturally, I want to preserve that softness. But it isn’t as easy as oiling, bathing and moisturizing. There’s a science to it. Let’s find out more about it.
pH level of the skin – The key to preserving baby’s soft skin
When focusing on baby skin care, you direct your attention simply to the mildness of products you use, right? While that matters, it doesn’t cross your mind to think about the pH level of your baby’s skin and customize your baby skincare routine accordingly. The result? Dry skin and rashes for your baby.
Taking your baby’s skin’s pH level into account is of utmost importance if you want your child’s skin to retain its soft texture and healthy glow. pH can be defined as the ‘potential of hydrogen’ of a substance (such as skin) and is used to measure its acidity or alkalinity. Covering a range of 1 to 14, a pH of below 7 indicates acidity, while that higher than 7 indicates alkalinity (1).
Now most of us think that a neutral pH of 7 is the best for our baby but that’s not true. You see, the human skin is slightly acidic in nature and is at its healthiest best at a pH of 5.5. A baby’s skin reaches this pH level within a few weeks to 3 months after birth.
Hence, using products with a pH higher than 5.5 or a neutral 7 can actually make a baby’s skin dryer as well as reduce its natural acid mantle, which is what protects the skin against bacteria and related infections (2).
So if you, like me, want to keep your baby’s skin healthy, you will have to look beyond the oiling-bathing-moisturizing routine and focus on the right baby care products. That does not mean products with a neutral pH level of 7 but that with a natural pH level of 5.5.
Granted, finding such baby products can prove to be a challenge. It did for me too! I really wanted a good moisturizer with a pH of 5.5 for my daughter for the harsh winter season. And, after a LOT of searching, I found the Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft, which matched my requirements.
This German brand produces a skincare range with a pH of 5.5, which has been developed with the help of dermatologists. This makes them suitable for those with sensitive skin, in my opinion.
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been using the Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft as a moisturizer for my princess and the experience has been good so far. This cream has a thick, dense consistency with a very mild aroma. Spreading it evenly is quite easy and a little goes a long way as using too much of this cream is not necessary. This is especially good considering the price of the cream, which is on the steep side. A 50ml bottle costs INR 222, while a 200ml one costs INR 637.
Since I’ve been using the Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft, I haven’t noticed any rashes or dryness on my baby’s skin. Which is great because her skin is really delicate and sensitive and requires that extra touch of care.
All in all, I like this baby cream a lot and you can try it out as well. Just be careful not to use too much of it as it can get it sticky. I hope this helped in improving your baby’s skin care regime!
