Is It Okay To Breastfeed Your Baby While Lying Down? We Tell You

It has often been said that it takes an entire village to raise a child. While this may not be true, there is no denying that raising a child is not an easy task. When it comes to parenting, there is no guidebook. If you recently became a mom and are worried about every small detail of your baby’s life, then we’re here to assure you that you’re not alone. Babies have so many needs, and catering to them in the right way can be confusing and difficult. Breastfeeding is perhaps the most confusing thing about being a new mom.

When you first start nursing your baby, you may find it extremely tiring and painful. Sitting for long hours in the same position while holding your baby can tire out your arms and shoulders. That’s why many women opt to feed their babies when lying down.

Feeding your baby while lying down is called the lying down position. In this position, you lie on your side, and your baby lies on its side and faces you. The head of the baby is placed near your breast to assist in latching.

If you would like to get even more comfortable in this position, you can tuck a pillow or cushion under your head while you breastfeed your baby. Alternatively, if a pillow is not available, you can rest your head against your arm. The elevated position of your head will make it easier to feed your baby and leave you feeling more comfortable. Before your baby latches, ensure that his/her nose is in line with your nipple. This will help your baby to latch on correctly and with ease. Holding your baby from the back will help your baby stay in this position and not roll away.

It is common for babies to nod off to sleep while being breastfed. In this position, it is quite common for both mother and baby to fall asleep. This position is great for late-night feeds as the mother does not even have to leave the bed to nurse the baby. It is also a less tiring position to feed your baby in and lets your arms and shoulders rest.

As great as this position is, it does have its drawbacks. Mothers with larger breasts may find it extremely challenging to feed their baby in this position. There are also chances that the milk will spill out from the baby’s mouth and get into their ears. This can be dangerous as it can cause the baby to develop an ear infection. There is also a chance that your baby can choke on the milk as this position may make it harder for your baby to swallow. Choking generally occurs when the baby takes more milk into the mouth than he/she can swallow. Gently tap your baby on the back if you find them choking.

This position of feeding reduces the strain on the back, neck and arms of the mother. Therefore the mother feels less exhausted after nursing their baby. However, this may not be an ideal position to feed your baby in. It can turn fatal for your baby if the milk enters their lungs.

The best way to know what position works best for you is to talk to a lactation expert. Experts will be able to provide you with greater clarity on the matter and help you find a position that is both safe for your baby and comfortable for you. It is generally advised not to try this position of feeding during the baby’s first few months. The trick to finding a position that works for you is to try all the positions with the help of a lactation expert till you find the one you are most comfortable in.
