Pregnant At 40, Kishwer M Rai Proves That It’s Time We Stop Talking About Ticking Biological Clocks

If you’re a woman in her late 20s or early 30s, you have probably heard people around you asking about when you’re going to have a baby. They might be asking you because they are concerned about your “ticking biological clock,” but it’s no one’s business except yours, and it’s time society learned that. Women are subjected to judgment and are expected to conform to society’s regressive norms. What if a woman does not want to be a mother? What if she is not ready yet? Why does she have to embrace motherhood just because she has hit a certain age? It’s unfair that you have to listen to people’s unsolicited advice, comments on the pretense of concern, and deal with unnecessary pressure just because you’ve reached a certain age. However, things are different now. Not all women pay heed to social norms and that includes the Indian television actress, Kishwer Merchant who announced her pregnancy at 40 and broke stereotypes.

On March 3rd, 2021, Kishwer Merchant Rai, popularly known for her roles in Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan, Ek Hasina Thi, and Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani, took to Instagram to share the news of her pregnancy. The television actress shared an aesthetic picture of her husband Suyyash Rai and her on a beach with “August 2021” engraved on the sand. She mentioned in her caption that people can stop asking them when they will have a baby and that the little one is expected to arrive in August 2021. She ended the caption with the hashtag #sukishkababy.

In an interview with a popular magazine portal, Kishwer Rai opened up about her pregnancy and how age is just a number. She said that 40 is the new 30 and debunks the stereotype that women can only get pregnant at a young age. The television actress calls all ladies to break these stereotypes and fight the gender norms that society has laid out for us.

Having a baby is a responsibility, and if you’re not ready for it, you shouldn’t have it. Period. Don’t let society’s compulsion force you into having a baby when you’re not prepared. Women have been shut down from being ambitious and pursuing their aspirations because they are pressured to have babies while young. We’ve been instructed to live a certain way all our lives, and it’s time that stops. With better health care, improved living standards, and advanced professional avenues for women, there is no hurry to rush into motherhood without being sure.

Granted that things have changed a lot in recent years, we still have a long way to go. Women like Kishwer, Farah Khan, Anita Hassanandani, and several others have proved that age is just a number. There is nothing wrong with waiting until you’re prepared mentally, financially, and emotionally to have a baby. Or doing it in a non-traditional way. It’s a reminder to young women who do not feel like they are ready to shoulder a baby’s responsibility that they don’t have to be arm-twisted into making that decision.

If Kishwer can conceive naturally at 40, it’s just proof that there is no reason to panic and give in to society’s comments about ticking biological clocks. If you want to have a baby at 22, go ahead, and if you’re going to have a baby at 40, that’s your call. It’s your body, and it’s up to you when you want to have a baby. Don’t let the world dictate a deadline to have a baby and stand up for what you believe in because you and only you can do that for yourself.

Kishwer and other women alike have proved that there is no ticking clock in a woman’s body that can stop her from doing what she wants. Besides, it’s her body, and it’s none of your business to tell her what she has to do with it. It’s time we let women be and stop making decisions for them!
