A Letter To My Sleeping Baby

Have you ever watched your baby sleep? It’s the most peaceful and blissful feeling in the whole wide world. If I could tell my baby how I felt, how her precious face and heartwarming smile made me think, I would not wait even for a minute. But since I cannot do that, I decided to write her a letter. Perhaps, when she is older, she can read it to know how much she meant to me from the very beginning. Or maybe, I’m writing it so that I can pen down my thoughts about her to express my feelings and love towards my little angel. Here goes:

Dear baby,

When you fall asleep, you radiate the light like the moon on a full night. Your sweet smile and tender fingers are just enough to make me smile. I swaddle you up in knitted sweaters that your grandmother made for you with her love so vast. Your tiny fingers slip out of the warm swaddle and almost always fall out during the night. I wrap you up to keep you warm and hold you in my arms, yet you seem to be lost in your sound sleep and do not move or brawl.

As I lay you down in your cradle, I watch you drift into sweet dreams. How do I know? I see you smile and even giggle sometimes. I rest my head beside to make sure you are fast asleep. Because I don’t want you to wake up and cry when you don’t find me around you.

I watch your long and beautiful lashes resting on your tenderly precious face. My heart overflows with love for you, the kind of love I did not think I could possess. You are lying right beside, yet somehow, I miss you. I yearn to hold you in my arms but fight the urge because I want you to have a good night’s rest.

At that moment, I forget all the struggles of the day. How I try to constantly feed you, bathe you, and wish that you cried less. My tired self and sleepiness are all lost when I see you enjoying your night’s sleep. The dirty diapers, spit-ups, and change of clothes for the 100th time suddenly do not matter to me. I might have spent the whole day thinking to myself how difficult it is to be a new mother, but the minute you are asleep, I remember how grateful I am that you came into my life and blessed me with all the love and goodness.

From the time you were born, your cuteness overpowered every struggle I had. The morning sickness, backaches, moodiness, and crankiness during my pregnancy had nothing over me the minute I saw your precious face. The pain I endured during my delivery, the postpartum pain and mood swings, and every other struggle with motherhood was worth it when I carried you in my arms. I knew you were a blessing, and I couldn’t be more grateful that you came into my life.

As I slowly drifted into my sleep, I saw your life flash before my eyes. Your first words, your highschool prom, your first day off to college, and your wedding aisle in a beautiful white dress are special moments of your life that I’ll cherish. In just a jiffy, I realized what a lovely journey it’s going to be with you in my life and how fast the days will go by.

I might not know what the future holds for you and me, but I promise you this, my love: I will always be there for you, holding your hand and guiding you through life’s perils. You will have a friend in me for life, and I will never give up on you. I will go above and beyond to make you smile and will always love you till the end of time.

Yours sincerely,
Your Mamma
