5 Hacks To Keep Your Baby's Hair Healthy

When a baby is born, he/she has either fine hair or a bald-like hair pattern. However, with time, babies do develop better hair. Yet, some parents may be eager to see their babies with thicker and stronger hair as soon as possible. If you are one such parent, here are a few tips to help you keep your baby’s hair healthy and stronger:

1. Oil Massage

Massaging the scalp with oil is good anyways because it helps in improving the blood circulation of the scalp. Massage your baby’s scalp with a sufficient amount of oil, preferably a bit warm, using light, circular motions. This will not only help the oil seep into the baby’s delicate scalp, but will also get rid of the dryness and flakiness that newborn babies generally have. However, do not try to use baby oil or any other commercial oils. Go for natural ones like coconut oil, castor oil, olive oil, almond oil, etc. You can also try to mix these oils and check the effects. For instance, you can mix a few drops of castor oil, which has a thick consistency, with coconut or almond oil. For best results, make sure you leave the oil overnight after the massage before washing it off the next morning.

2. Nutritious Diet

While an oil massage is definitely good for your baby, a nutritious diet will do wonders. Of course, breast milk is the best for newborns. But you can also ensure your baby gets a sufficient amount of vitamin D by letting him/her absorb the early morning sunlight. For babies who are on a solid food diet, try adding foods that are rich in vitamin D and proteins. Foods like apricots, carrots, or pumpkins (in pureed forms), boiled eggs, blanched almonds, salmon, and walnuts are rich sources of protein. Of course, check with your pediatrician if your baby shows any signs of nuts or seafood allergy.

3. Shampoo With Conditioning

Use a mild shampoo for your baby’s hair. If you have been using a particular shampoo for a long time and find that it makes your baby’s hair too dry or frizzy, try switching to a mild soap or vice versa. This may help.

Make sure you also condition your baby’s hair. Try homemade conditioners instead of the commercial ones. Massage a simple mixture of a teaspoonful of honey and extra virgin olive oil on to your baby’s scalp. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes before washing off. It is enough to condition your little one’s delicate hair and scalp. Alternatively, you can also use mashed hibiscus leaves and flowers, or even egg whites.

4. Regular Hair Brushing

It may sound odd, but yes, your baby’s tiny hair also needs to be combed to keep them in good shape and free of knots. Use a soft baby brush or comb to untangle your baby’s tresses soon after a bath or after your baby wakes up from sleep. However, be very careful not to add extra pressure when combing/brushing your baby’s hair near the soft spots, i.e., the fontanels.

5. Hygienic Bedding And Clothes

This is probably one aspect that gets neglected the most. Your baby’s tiny hair and dandruff flecks deposit on his/her cap, blankets, and pillows (if your baby is using one). More often than not, these things come into direct contact not only with your baby’s scalp but also skin. The greasiness and grime attached to the clothing and bedding may quickly latch onto the baby’s scalp or skin and result in infections. So, make sure you regularly change and wash the pillow covers and blankets. Wash your baby’s caps in warm water to effectively remove the grime without damaging the fabric.

We hope these important hacks help you in your quest to improve your baby’s hair growth. Do you have any secret hacks of your own, which have proven effective? If yes, then do share them with all of us mothers. Let us spread the word and help other babies get a healthy crowning glory!
