Man Experiences Labor Pain After Challenging His Wife. What Happened After That Will Touch You!

Sometimes men say the worst possible things at the worst possible moments. To be fair to them, they don’t exactly know the labour process and how it feels to give birth to a child. Yes, they can see what their partner goes through, but one truly needs to experience something for themselves in order to understand and empathise.

For example, one man Tom Mitchelson said the wrong thing to his wife ONLY 24 hours after she gave birth. To challenge his wife, in order to prove that labour pain isn’t all that bad, he experienced the same and guess what? He was proved wrong.

Here Is Their Story

Everything began when Tom and his wife Jenny were discussing their experience at the hospital where Jenny gave birth to their baby boy. This is when Tom made the comment, “The worst thing was having to stay in a hospital for 24 hours after he was born.” He was referring to a sleepless night on a chair. Obviously Jenny wasn’t pleased. Which woman would be? She then asked, “You think that was the worst thing about the experience?” Obviously Tom didn’t know any better!

Tom disagreed with his wife by thinking labour pain isn’t all that bad, which lead to the idea of him going through the same pain and proving to women that it’s endurable. He took it as a challenge, which is how they landed up in a hospital in Amsterdam to prove or disprove the harshness of labour pains.

His disbelieving wife said, “If you really believe you could cope, then give it a go.” Their female friends all had a laugh and wished him luck. One friend even said, “’It won’t be the same. You won’t have been pregnant for nine months. Labour is like climbing Everest after running a marathon.”

How The Hospital Induced Pain

In order to stimulate the labour pains, current electrodes were attached to Tom’s abdomen. 4 to be specific. These electrodes pass current that reaches Tom’s body. Kim, the expert physiotherapist steadily increased the current – the intensity and amount of time just like in actual labour.

The pain was induced in 3 stages. Stage 1 is when the contractions begin. Here Jim felt slight pain and discomfort for about 30 seconds. He was asked to grade the pain on a scale of 1 to 10. Stage 1 was a 2-3 for him.

Stage 2 had longer contractions that had a higher intensity. Contractions were repeated every 5 minutes and lasted for 45 seconds. Now Tom was officially in a lot of pain. For the sake of comparison, during labour, Jenny went through 20 hours of contractions! Her umbilical cord was wrapped around her son’s neck making things dangerous.

Stage 3 is when the stomach is pushed extremely hard. So much so that it feels like it would come out of the back of your body. Just imagining it gives us the shivers. Now contractions occur every 3 minutes and last for a whole minute. The intensity is greatly increased, which resulted in unbearable pain for Tom. His pain level reached a 9 on the scale. Jenny tried to calm him down by asking him to breathe. He yelled back saying, “You breathe through it!” Women, does this reaction sound familiar? ;)

This more or less marked the end of the experiment as Tom was in agony and officially admitted he was wrong. He now appreciates his wife and other women much, much more. However, luckily for him, he experienced only a fraction of the real thing. Sadly, labour isn’t all that quick and straightforward. On the bright side, he now understands what mothers go through!
