9 Misguided Beliefs About C-Section

Caesarean or C-section operations have been done to deliver babies for decades. People should be familiar with what this common procedure entails. However, there are a lot of misconceptions about what happens during the operation. Such misleading information makes a pregnant mother nervous and fearful of this perfectly safe and time-tested operation. Myths about it have to be examined carefully. As the experience of individual mothers tends to vary, we should not go by just a couple of instances to decide what is true and what is not about C-section.

Normally, a mother is given anaesthetic injections to make her chest and lower body numb, while the baby is taken out. Hence, she gets to be awake during the operation. In case of complications, there is a small chance that she is given general anaesthesia, and then, and only then, would she be unconscious during delivery.

A cut is made below the lower abdomen and it is just large enough for the head of the baby to come out. This heals quickly and placed where it is, the scar is barely visible. Consequently, mothers who choose to have the C-section need not fear that they will have ugly scars across their stomachs.

3. Will Other Organs Be Pulled Out During A C-Section?

There are silly rumours making the rounds that all the organs inside the stomach are pulled out during a C-section. Doctors are trained professionals who take the utmost care during surgery and no organ in the body is pulled out unnecessarily.

4. Will The Mother Feel The Baby Come Out?

Just as a mother can feel the baby come out of her vagina, so does the mother undergoing a C-section- she too can feel her baby come out of her abdomen. Whatever the method of birth is, the experience is memorable.

5. Will The Mother Be Able To See Her Own Operation?

The mother will not be able to see doctors making a cut on her body because a sterile curtain hangs between her and the doctors operating on the mid-section of her body. This is the normal procedure.

6. Will The Mother Be Able To Hold Her Baby?

Whatever the method of delivery, every woman is likely to be too weak and exhausted for a few hours after her delivery. It depends on every individual case, the health of the mother, the baby, and the rules followed by a particular hospital. But there are always people around who can hold the baby close to the mother as she feeds it or looks at it for the first time.

7. Will The Mother Be Able To Breastfeed The Baby?

The mother may need some help in holding the baby to her breast, but otherwise she is just as capable as any other to feed her baby.

8. Will She Be Able To Deliver Another Child Normally?

Incisions made during a C-section are small and below the lower abdomen. So, it is possible for the mother to experience a vaginal delivery the next time she has a baby.

9. Will The Mother Be Able To Bond With The Baby?

Studies have proved the baby feels reassured by the mother’s touch. A mother who has just had a C-section needs a few extra weeks to recover. It is true that she will be able to hold the baby a little less than she would want to. But the mother-child bond is about years of nurture and caring, and a few weeks of rest cannot affect it.

Having a C-section ensures that both the mother and the baby are safe and healthy. There is a lot of misinformation about this procedure. However, mothers who have delivered this way are, for the most part, pretty happy about their experiences.
