Transporting Breast Milk: The Need For It

On June 16th, Jikmet Wangdu and Dorjey Palmo, who live in Leh were blessed with a baby boy. Soon after his birth, the mother noticed that her baby was unable to suckle. They consulted the doctor and found that he was born with a condition where his trachea and esophagus were connected. The baby needed immediate surgery and was flown to Delhi by his uncle on June 18th. His father, Wangdu, came from Mysuru, Karnataka, where he works as a teacher, to take care of his son. The infant was admitted in Max Super Specialty Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, Delhi.

The surgery was conducted on June 19th and was successful. As the baby recovered, the doctors suggested that it’s best to feed the baby breast milk as milk powder might lack the necessary nutrition. Therefore, the family arranged for 60ml bottles of breast milk to be transported from 1,000 km away, i.e., Leh to Delhi. The principal pediatric consultant at the hospital said that the feed comes in a particular container made of thermocol and rexine. The milk is given to the baby, and the empty containers fly back to the mother. She then fills them up and sends them back to Delhi to her son.

Wangdu said that he was worried about how he would manage this, but because he has a few friends working at the Leh airport, they advised him to transport the milk. After hearing about the need for its everyday transportation, the airlines granted them free transport for the baby’s food. What a sweet gesture!

The baby’s doctor said that he is responding well to the treatments and will soon be heading back home with his father. He added that the infant’s condition is not uncommon, but they need surgery within 48 hours of birth. Therefore, the hospital team met the infant and his uncle at the airport and took good care of him. He also said that the baby is a chirpy child and often interacts with the nurses.

Wangdu praised the hospital and its staff for taking good care of his son, who is on the path to recovery. He said that the doctors and nurses have even started feeding him orally and will soon be heading home. It is quite wonderful to hear such stories and witness people helping each other in need.
