Mother’s Pregnancy Test Is Positive. What Doctors See Is ‘Grapes’ Instead Of Baby

Once you start a family, you always harbor a feeling to make it complete, to add to your brood so that there are more occasions to look forward to, more companionship for your child, more happiness and laughter in the house, and possibly a little more noise and bickering too.

And the dream comes true when you announce to the world that you are going to be parents for the second time. Your pregnancy is the key to the lovely cheers and congratulations that start pouring in. You already start making plans and changes to welcome the new arrival.

But what happens when your plans and dreams shatter like a pack of cards and you suddenly realize that the positive pregnancy tests and symptoms were mere delusions?

This unfortunate turn of events befell upon a family that was busy making preparation for the arrival of the new baby that the mom was carrying. They were already blessed with a son and the news of the second child made them happy with all the anticipation of new joys coming their way.

The first instance of the impending gloom came when the mom began getting sicker than usual. It was worrying because she had hardly experienced any of such discomfort when she had her first baby.

The second blow to their hopes came with the first scan. The ultrasound confirmed what seemed impossible – that there wasn’t any sign of a baby in the growing belly. Instead, her big bulge was seen containing small tumor like growths. This was one of the rare cases of what experts called molar pregnancy.

Molar pregnancy occurs when a tissue that is supposed to grow into a foetus, grows abnormally inside the uterus, taking form of small cysts/ grape-like structures. Technically, it isn’t an embryo, yet the growth of these tissues set off the pregnancy related symptoms.

Let the pictures below tell us their story and how they overcame it.

The pregnancy home kit showed positive for a baby. What a joy it was, to know that more will make them merrier. They were gearing up to welcome the new member.

The cute belly bump was growing bigger very fast, but something felt odd. The constant sickness and poor health were not exactly the welcoming signs. Soon it was time for the first scan.

The first scan was a shock. It did not show the family a tiny baby there. All they could see were small clusters of tissues floating about. They were tumors, harmless but heart-breaking.

So, this condition was molar pregnancy which needed immediate treatment. The uterine matter was cleared by the d&c surgery to avoid further complications. Generally, if the mother wishes to do away with having more children, the uterus is removed. But thankfully, here the mom didn’t have to undergo a hysterectomy.

The symptoms of molar pregnancy include:

a. Vaginal bleeding that is dark-brownish to bright reddish in appearance
b. Vaginal discharge comprising of grape-like tissues
c. Size of uterus that is bigger than usual
d. Discomfort in the pelvic region
e. Fatigue, tiredness and palpitation.

One can only be so thankful that the diagnosis and the treatment were done on time. The mom and the son make such a picture, what more could a family wish for!

Sometimes, destiny has plans which don’t match with ours. But what is important is to accept our bodies and move on with happiness and grace. The above family did lose a chance to have another baby biologically, but they are thankful that the health issues and the emotional ordeal are over. It is a perfect time to hang on to each other and create happiness every day.
