5 Bollywood Movies That Beautifully Portrayed Mother-Son Relationship

Mothers play an important role in every one of our lives. From the moment we are born, they spend all their time and effort in taking care of us and tending to our needs. They guide us in the right direction and are there for us whenever we need them. A mother is a true best friend in every sense. Unlike the stereotypical mothers that were portrayed in movies in the ’70s and ’80s, the role of a mother has definitely evolved in our movies. While the actor and actress take the lead in most movies, there were a few where the role of a mother has been sacrosanct. Here we bring you 5 Indian movies that beautifully captured the mother-son relationship.

1. Taare Zameen Par

Produced and directed by Aamir Khan, this movie resonated with every kid who ever watched it. The movie manages to capture the life of 8-year-old Ishaan who is constantly under the scrutiny of his parents for getting poor grades. Something we all can relate to! Ishaan is a cheerful dyslexic kid with a strict father and a loving mother. Though the movie explores different elements of a child’s life, the one thing that stands out the most is the relationship between Ishaan and his mother. The song Maa which plays when Ishaan is sent to a boarding school tugs at the heartstrings of every child and mother with its beautiful lyrics and its flawless portrayal of a mother’s role in a child’s life.

2. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…

Who can forget the iconic scene in KKKG when Nandini played by Jaya Bachchan feels her son’s presence even before he has entered the room. The opening scenes of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… shows the growing bond between Nandini and her adopted son, Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan). While one would expect there to be at least a slight discrimination with her adopted son, Nandini loves Rahul just as much or even more than her biological son. The movie shows the gentle, kind, and emotional side of a mother and the strong connection she shares with her son.

3. Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na

Ratna Pathak Shah plays the role of Imran Khan’s mother in the romantic comedy, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. Savitri played by Ratna is the best mom anyone could ever have. Not only was she loving, but she was extremely understanding of her teenage son. She was portrayed as the cool modern-day mother who has a close relationship with her son but is protective of him. The bond between Ratna and Imran is beautifully depicted and is as real as it gets.

4. Rang De Basanti

Mrs. Rathod is played by Waheeda Rehman in this thriller drama. She is a widow who later loses her son as well. The movie shows the strength of a mother’s love as she continues to fight for her son’s justice even when she is broken inside. The scene where she receives her son’s belongings after his demise is still fresh in our minds.

Another mother-son relationship that we absolutely love in Kirron Kher’s in the movie. She plays the role of Aamir Khan’s mother. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Kirron’s character flawlessly captures every Indian mother. DJ’s mother relentlessly worries about her son when he is not around, calls him out on his antics, and prays for his safety. But unlike the typical Indian mother who is always in tears, she is shown as someone fun, warm, and sassy.

5. Paa

Vidya Balan’s character in Paa is one that shows strength and courage more than anything else. The fact that you may outlive your son is a terrifying thought for every mother and even more so when you are a single parent. The movie gives us an insight into what it is like living with a child with a rare genetic condition called progeria. The warm bond between Vidya and Auro is both heartwarming and emotional to watch.
