When a woman takes the decision to have a baby, it can get really hard to wait. All she can think about is becoming a mother and getting to hold the little one for the first time. But then, the results don’t always show as soon as one would like them to. This can become frustrating and annoying. And, even more so if you go for methods such as In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) where luck plays a huge role too. But, it is unfortunate if something as beautiful as the thought of bringing a new being into this world is smeared by any negative thought. Probably, that is why scientists across the world continuously work towards easing this phase for a woman in whichever way possible.

Doctors in Cambridge made a discovery recently, which can prove to be an awesome news for all the women out there who are trying to have a baby (1). This new approach to IVF can boost the chances of a woman becoming pregnant significantly. IVF is a complicated process in which the sperm and eggs are combined outside of the body in a laboratory (2).

The discovery was made in a clinic that is a part of the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The trial saw participation from 167 women, aged somewhere between 24 and 45. The doctors proposed to freeze the embryos and then wait for a minimum of one month before the first one is implanted. This gave time for the recovery of a woman’s body post the fertility treatment’s first stage.

Are you wondering how this process is different from the usual IVF treatment? In the traditional method, the fresh embryo is usually transferred into the woman’s uterus. This transfer is done within a span of one week from the time the embryo is retrieved.

In the trial, the researchers observed around 62 percent success rate in cases where the new method was adopted. This was more in comparison to the 40.6 percent success rate in cases where fresh embryos were transferred (3). According to the experts, this break in between the process is what helps boost the pregnancy rates.

In fact, the success rate of 62 percent is almost twice the national average pregnancy rate – 36 percent – when fresh embryos are used. This is as per the data shared by the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority.

The National Health Service (NHS) clinic has already adopted this procedure in the IVF treatments. The clinic has taken this after observing an over 50 percent increase in the pregnancy rates during the conducted research. The doctors at Cambridge are saying that it is a great news for couples since they can begin their fertility treatment knowing that they are more likely to find success in their endeavor.

Stephen Harbottle, who is the consultant embryologist and service lead at Cambridge IVF, said that the team of researchers were pretty surprised by the constant success they have gained over the course of 18 months. The surprise was despite the fact that they had been working on the freezing technique for quite some time now. And, they are hoping that the results will get even better with time.

Yes, there is a long way to go for sure. But, isn’t it heartwarming to see efforts made in this direction? The decision to embrace motherhood is a significant milestone in every woman’s life. One that should go as smoothly as possible. And, any step in the direction to help out women who are looking to unfold this new chapter in their life is much appreciated. Way to go, guys! Hope that all your future endeavors are successful too!

And, to all the women who are ready to welcome a cute, little person into their world, all the best!
