We’ve all heard of something called the generation gap. It is real, and it exists because of how much our lives change with every new generation. The world that we live in today is fast-paced and governed by technology. You could say that we live in an alternate universe in the digital space, which is normal for us. But for our parents, that might be strange because they came from a generation that did not grow up with the internet. With social media, the internet, and information available at the tap of a finger, it is almost impossible to imagine life without our smartphones and other digital devices. However, our parents survived it. They lived a different childhood, one that was spent mostly outdoors. Forget the internet, they didn’t even have television. They spent their free time with their friends outdoors and walked to places.
We have all heard the infamous stories our parents throw in our faces reminding us that we are “lucky” because they had to walk 100 km to get to school. Another famous one that we all have probably heard is how they studied under street lamps or with the help of candle lights and managed to top their classes. But we? We are given the “privilege” of tube lights and even inverters, and yet we fail. Sorry to disappoint you, parents!
You’d probably be lying if you say that you did not get into arguments with your parents when they told you these things. We wondered why they never got it—it was the generation gap! As ‘90s kids, we have seen the most transformation. We got to experience days without the internet to it becoming an integral part of everyday life. Besides, we witnessed a global pandemic that has left a mark in history. So, it got us wondering what we will be like as parents compared to how our parents were to us and here are a few things that struck us:
1. The Dilemma Of All Time
Can you imagine being parents while dealing with this global situation? You have to ensure your kids do not leave the house. But our parents waited for the slightest chance to get us to go outdoors.
2. Message Forwards
Our parents will never truly learn how technology works. They believe everything that is sent on WhatsApp as if it’s the holy grail of life. Ugh, at least we know better!
3. Home-coming
All of you who were told to leave your house because you don’t spend enough time at home, a moment of silence for you. Our parents complained that we were never home when we were out having fun. But pretty sure, we’re going to have to throw our kids out of the house because they would never leave.
4. Netflix And Chill
We cannot help but binge-watch our favorite shows and movies, all at once. We might even beat our kids to it or have a watch-a-thon with them.
5. Bye Bye School
We cannot help that we are more savage than our parents were! They had to walk miles to school, but we went through a global pandemic. Guess we can call that even.
We tend to think that our parents are so old-school and do not understand us and our generation. But with the way things are moving forward, it would be a miracle if we are half as understanding to our kids as our parents were to us. We might finally be able to understand what our parents meant when they said, “you’ll only understand when you become a parent”.
