Your prenatal visits to the hospital don’t become charming until you hear your baby’s heartbeat for the first time. I swear, pregnancy doesn’t get any more delightful until you hear the first sign of life inside you. It’s so much more than seeing that line on a home pregnancy kit. Hearing your baby’s heartbeat is as good as coming to believe that life is growing inside you. It’s a much more tangible proof than all your prenatal tests and scans.
Typically, moms usually hear that low thudding or galloping noise, only towards the end of the first trimester. In fact, with every subsequent Doppler sitting, as you hear the heartbeat, the excitement only increases. You will fall in love with the little thing soon after you hear it for the first time and will eagerly await your next visit.
What’s more, as mothers, we have all our emotions pouring in at one time. And, men aren’t too far behind either, most daddies are overwhelmed as well. And, on that note, let’s look at some adorable ways parents reacted to their baby’s first heartbeat:
1. A mother describes that her pregnancy only became a reality when she heard her baby’s heartbeat for the first time. She had first seen the positive pregnancy test, but the real excitement was to come later. The positive test hadn’t sunk in, as though she hadn’t conceived, but with the doppler that little bulb flicked on.
2. One woman describes how her mother’in-law’s attitude changed towards her and the baby when she heard her baby’s heartbeat. This mother didn’t want her mother-in-law to be there with her at the Doppler sitting. But seeing her mother-in-law’s face light up changed their mutual attitudes towards each other.
3. One woman says that her boyfriend wasn’t able to accompany her to the first appointment but later managed to skip his lunch to attend. And “it was worth every moment”, the boyfriend exclaimed in delight.
4. A woman recorded her baby’s heartbeat on her phone for her husband to hear. When he heard it, he was all nervous, scared and excited at once. It was a great moment.
5. One woman says it sounded like ‘galloping horses’. She was amused at how fast the heartbeat was.
6. But in another case, this mother was worried that she could hear nothing for a long time – let alone feel how fast a baby’s heart beat are inside the womb. For the first few minutes, she could hear only swishing and gurgling sound from the placenta.
7. Another woman talks about how terrified she was when she couldn’t hear anything for ten minutes. It turns out that that the baby was too tiny to stay steady and was swimming around in the womb.
8. One woman was second guessing about keeping her baby, worrying about how they were going to manage after the arrival of the second. But hearing her little one’s heartbeat made her fall in love instantly, and her worries vanished at once. They had issues, but could not longer wait to see their little one.
9. Some women have mixed feelings and emotions through pregnancy. It is no different at one of those prenatal visits. One woman talks about how tense she would get when she would start listening to her baby’s heartbeats. And, the next moment there would be a sweet relief that her baby is breathing inside.
10. With the advent of smartphones, many women like to record their little one’s first heartbeat for safe keeping; and we encourage such women. It is a moment to cherish. While you might not want to let the world know, you could let immediate family and friends in on the secret.
