Being a parent is not easy. It takes dedication, commitment, and patience, among other things. You watch fellow parents around you and learn from them. You read books, blogs and get parenting advice from elders at home to raise your kids. Even with all this, when you become a parent, you are bound to question your abilities. You only want the best for your children, but you often ask yourself, “Am I doing the right thing?”.
The way you raise your kids will determine who they grow up to be as adults. The values and moral system you instill in them will define the kind of people they are, and that can be terrifying. However, there is only so much you can do for your kids because you have no control over the rest. You have to allow your kids to become their own person, make mistakes, learn from them and give them space and freedom to become who they are. It’s not easy, but here are 6 signs that you are doing an excellent job as a parent:
1. You Engage In Two-Way Communication

You have to instill two-way communication with your children. Back and forth communication teaches your kids that a big part of communication is listening. It does not involve only speaking but also allowing others to speak. To establish a healthy communication method with your kids, look them in the eye whether you are talking or listening. It shows honesty, integrity, and character. Motivate them to speak to you and assure them that you listen to them when they speak.
2. You Are Not Afraid To Apologize

Being a parent does not mean that you’re always right. To err is human, so when you make a mistake, do not be afraid to apologize and mean it. When you apologize to your kids after you make a mistake, it shows them that you take responsibility for your actions. It builds trust and openness. Your kids learn to do the same when they make a mistake and do not run away from it. They learn to say sorry with sincerity when you set an example of apologizing genuinely.
3. You Dream With Your Child

Don’t be afraid to dream with your child. Show them that ambition is a good thing, and encourage your kids to dream big. You can dream with them and be open to discussing your children’s dreams and ambitions. By doing this, you show them that they have your support. It helps them pursue their hobbies, goals, and ambition with more confidence. Your kids are likely to achieve their big dream when they have your support.
4. You Follow A Schedule

A routine brings in discipline and security in a child’s life. Knowing what the day looks like gives them comfort, control, and confidence. Prepare schedules and follow them. Help your kids prepare their own schedules and encourage them to follow them. It builds structure and discipline in kids, and in the long run, they become more responsible, independent, and accountable for their tasks.
5. You Set The Right Example

Your children look up to you more than anyone else. They watch what you do and mirror those actions. Kids learn more from what you do rather than what you teach them. Therefore, it’s crucial to set the right example. You are their role model, and it’s your job to teach them right from wrong. Don’t be afraid to correct your kids when they are wrong but do it constructively.
6. You Have Their Backs

Your kids feel safe and protected when you’re around. It is your duty to stand by them and keep them safe from harm. However, being overprotective does not help their case. If you restrict their freedom, they may start to resent you and rebel against you. Therefore, allow them to be and know they have your support. Your kids need to know that they can count on you when they need it.
