1. Explosive Poop

Okay, explosive might be a little too exaggerated. However, many parents might agree here. Wait until you have to deal with a diaper blowout or more, you might just nod at this too. Don’t worry; you are not the first parent to clean the baby’s poop off the walls. Since bowel movements in babies are mostly of a liquid consistency, it is easy for them to shoot them out with force.

When to worry:

If the poop has colour, whether it’s brown, green, or yellow, or if it has certain seedy particles, it is good to go. However, if you spot blood, it might be a good idea to get your paediatrician on the call.

2. Baby Breasts

You might remember those hormones that made you insane during your pregnancy. Well, guess what? They affect your baby as well. Excessive oestrogen may get passed through the umbilical cord and cause the development of breast buds on your baby, even in boys (1). Furthermore, these tiny breasts might leak liquid too. But, fret not! This condition will go away within a few weeks or months.

When to worry:

In case you notice any signs of severe tenderness and redness close to your baby’s breast, consult the doctor.

3. Odd-Shaped Heads

Your baby just came out of your womb, and its head is a cone; it is bound to send you into panic mode. But, let us ease your tension by telling you that it is indeed common. The entire process of coming out of the birth canal could be rough for your baby (2). So, its head is malleable and adaptable to the shape of this canal enabling a smoother exit. However, it is not an alarm and will return to normal in a few weeks.
In case the kid develops flat parts on its head, make sure to alternate sleeping positions.

When to worry:

If you have tried everything but there’s no improvement in the shape, your doctor might help and recommend wearing a helmet.

4. Crossed Eyes

Since your baby is still in the development stage it might be difficult for him/her to control their muscles and focus properly. Don’t stress; it will get stronger as the days progress and the baby will master the skill in no time. If you find that your baby’s eyes are crossed, it might be due to pseudoesotropia (3).

When to worry:

Symptoms of crossed eyes which last beyond 6 months of age might be a call of concern. So, you must have your baby checked by the doctor.

5. Swollen Genitals

Often, your kid’s genitals could seem to be unusually large or swollen. However, the reason could be the build-up of extra fluid inside the body due to the hormonal exposure. The puffiness will go down in some time as these fluids pass out of the body.

When to worry:

If the swelling does not seem to go away within a few days post delivery, you must probably get it looked at, by your paediatrician.

Most of the symptoms mentioned above are temporary and do not require medical intervention. But, taking a second opinion is never a bad idea! So, go ahead and call your paediatrician to clear your doubts.
