Single Moms Find It Hard To Get Houses

It’s the 21st century but the treatment that women get in society has not evolved as much as it should have. Women have landed on the moon, become rulers of countries, and are even flying planes but somehow society seems to place them on a lower value than men. We wonder why that is so and honestly, it is frustrating and even outrageous. The society we live in only validates women when she has a man by her side and this aspect is seen in more ways than one. Right from the pink tax to the pay gap and the various atrocities that women have to face in society, what’s becoming clear is that we have a long way to go to live in a feminist society, one with complete gender equality.

It is quite shocking and rather disappointing to know that women are not given credit where it’s due even in today’s day and age. While this is the reason for fury, the regressive idea that divorced women or single mothers are considered characterless is outright enraging. Recently, a single mother in Bangalore expressed her concern about how much of trouble she faces with house owners and landlords to get a house. The minute they realize that she is a single mother, they deny her the house because they deem her unfit to pay the rent or do not even take her seriously.

Being a single mother is not easy. It takes a lot of commitment, dedication, and sacrifice to be able to raise children and handle financial responsibility but many women do it with immense strength and courage. No one likes to have a broken marriage though back in the day women were not educated enough to know their rights. They did not know how to stand up for themselves which lead them to put up with abuse, infidelity, and emotional torture. They felt that they did not have the means to support themselves. But with financial independence and education, women are more aware of their rights and their place in society. So, they choose to leave a marriage that causes them harm. Sometimes, a marriage simply does not work out. But in the society we live in, women bear the brunt of it all, and men are allowed to live without any judgments.

Not only is this extremely hypocritical of society but it also highlights the level of misogyny that exists in our society. A single mother is still considered a stigma in our society and women who hunt for houses vouch that they go through a ton of harassment while looking for a place. Owners of houses delve right into your personal life the minute they realize you do not have a husband. They even go to the extent of asking you why you got a divorce or why couldn’t you make it work. As long as the single mothers show them proof of financial ability to pay the rent, does any other information matter?

As a society, we are quick to pass judgments on women who are single mothers. Many house owners also hesitate to rent their houses to single mothers because they are afraid that ex-husbands will create problems in the future. Some of them judge the woman’s character without an ounce of hesitation. Women have it hard in every aspect of society and this is another aspect that shows us how much we need to progress as a society towards being more considerate and aware of the prejudices against women.

Single mothers are strong, independent, and can take on the world, but somehow unless there is a man by their side, society views them as weak and troublesome. This is a rather sad thought but it’s the unfortunate truth. Single mothers have to settle in homes that compromise their quality of life because they are not given an equal opportunity. When will we, as a society, let our women be free and accept them without bias, is a question we all have to reflect on today.
