Teen Girl Gives Birth To India's Heaviest Baby

When giantess Anna Bates gave birth to a son, who weighed a whopping 9.98kg in 1879, she created a world record that has stood the test of time, at least for a little more than 100 years. Unfortunately, the baby who was called ‘Babe’, died around 10 hours after his birth.

Anna was 7ft 11 inches tall, so it was no surprise that she gave birth to a big and heavy baby. But when a healthy looking 19-year-old woman gave birth to a 6.82kg baby, the heaviest baby India has ever seen, it was a shock and a time for celebration for the couple.

Nandini, who hails from Doddihalli in Belar taluk near Bengaluru, gave birth to a much-larger-than-normal baby on 23 May.

“The previous record holding baby weighed in at 5.8kg. But Nandini’s 15-pound baby has smashed that record,” said beaming husband Arun, who works for a bakery in the city.

The doctors have been left dumbfounded, and they have decided to keep the baby under observation as she is rather overweight. Thankfully, Nandini seems to have better luck than poor ol’ Anna.

Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences superintendent Dr K Shankar, who delivered the baby girl through a C-section, said: “We are performing abdominal scans and blood tests on the baby to look for any abnormalities. Right now, everything seems to be going along well. And, we hope that it continues.”

It is the time for jubiliation for the family, even as they pray for the well-being of the baby. Tell us about your views on the subject. Leave a comment below.
