6 Things I've Learned From My Mother-In-Law

Marriage comes with several other relationships, some you might like and others not so much. And, for most women, mothers-in-law often feature in the latter. In most scenarios, the daughters-in-law can’t see eye-to-eye with them. But then, there are some cases where women also dote on their mothers-in-law in the same way they love their moms. And, having a good rapport with your mom-in-law does help. Fortunately, I was able to find not just a mother but also a gentle teacher in my mom-in-law. And, in the process, I learned and drew inspiration from her experience and wisdom. Here, I bring you some of them:

I already loved cooking and knew a lot of different cuisines and foods. In fact, I thought I was a pro at it. Surprisingly, my mom-in-law knew of dishes that I had not even heard of. And, these cuisines were so good that it took me to a different world altogether. I took the opportunity and learned those recipes from her. If you feel the same, just politely ask her and she will surely oblige. After all, she would always want her son to be well-fed and satisfied.

Since I was in a proper courtship with my husband even before marriage, I already knew more or less everything about him. Never did I think that there will be a few surprises still awaiting me. I soon realized that my husband had certain habits and preferences that only my mother-in-law knew about. After all, he had spent his entire life with this woman. So, I kept talking to my mom-in-law. And, guess what? I learned a bunch of secrets about my husband that I had no clue of, something as simple as one of his childhood incidents or hobbies.

Even though I did not want to accept this, I had much more freedom at my mom’s house. I could afford to skip a few household chores here and there, knowing fully well that my mom will take care of everything. But, things changed when I built my own place. There were so many things that I had to manage all by myself, from the household responsibilities to my professional commitments. And, this is exactly where my mother-in-law helped me learn how to manage things more efficiently.

In my busy schedule, it becomes difficult at times to keep in touch with my close friends and relatives. And, when such a situation ever arises, my mom-in-law gladly steps in and helps me organize family functions, bringing in all the folks together. Over the course of years, she has taught me subtle ways of keeping the family together, which counts in the long run.

When I became a new mom, the number of emotions and responsibilities that came my way completely overwhelmed me. Even though it is not always possible for her, my mom-in-law steps in to provide the much-needed help whenever she can. And, as I watched, I tried to quietly learn as much as I could from her. One of the best tricks that I learned from her was to manage ten things all at once.

When it comes to my own mom, I treat her like a friend. Perhaps, that is why I am unable to take most of her advice and instructions seriously. But, there is a tiny bit of formality that exists between my mom-in-law and me. And, this formality helps me take her advice a little more seriously. For me, whenever I feel like I need a solid advice, I just give my mother-in-law a call. And, tada, I am sorted!

These are some of the things I got to learn from my mother-in-law. And, you can too! While she might not always say and do the right things, remember that she means well. After all, her son has chosen to marry you. And, you are special. All the best!
