No matter how much planning and preparation goes into pregnancy, sometimes things can take a complete U-turn and make us realize that some things are beyond our control. Numerous times we have heard stories of women giving birth at a parking lot, on the side of the road, or inside a car. And how we’ve freaked out at the thought of it ever happening to us. These women are proof that your birth plan can take a last-minute detour, and you can end up giving birth anywhere but the hospital. For this post, we bring you wacky birth stories of moms who didn’t make it to the hospital.
I Gave Birth On My Kitchen Floor

Katie’s due date wasn’t for another two weeks. She was confident that she had plenty of time before the baby’s arrival. “With 2 little boys in the house, I didn’t get enough time to prepare for my baby’s birth. My hospital bag was unpacked and the car seat was yet to be attached by my husband. But we were sure to get everything done before the due date. However, things took a different turn when I started getting contractions two weeks prior to my due date. We decided to rush to the hospital but once my contractions started getting stronger and more frequent I felt it was a bad idea to hit the road. We immediately called my midwife. She suggested that we prepare for birth at home and promised that she would be here in no time. But soon I had the urge to push and asked my husband to assist me. We had our baby in less than half an hour. My husband had called 911 to escort us to the hospital soon after birth. Thankfully there were no complications and everything went smoothly.”

While most moms’ birth plans take an unexpected turn when their baby decides to arrive a little early, Jenine was actually a few days behind her due date. “I was getting impatient and couldn’t wait to pop this baby out and be done with pregnancy. I was in the shower when I started getting contractions, but I wasn’t confident if it was a real one. So I decided to wait it out until I felt my second one, after which I got dressed and informed my husband. We took the hospital bag and rushed out of the front door. It was a 30 minutes drive but since it was rush hour, we estimated it would take longer than that. My husband decided to take a short cut since the contractions started getting more intense and frequent, but we got lost midway. We spotted a fire station nearby and that’s when I asked my husband to pull up since I was confident we weren’t going to make it to the hospital. Things escalated quickly and I ended up giving birth on a stretcher with several firemen and paramedics by my side.”

Bridgett was 34-weeks pregnant when she was awakened by a contraction early in the morning. She quickly turned around and woke her husband from sleep. “I don’t remember much since I was freaking out at the thought of giving birth anywhere else than the hospital. I called our midwife and asked her to accompany us to the hospital. We got dressed and rushed to the hospital picking up our midwife on the way over. I was quite relieved since there was no traffic. My contractions started getting stronger. As soon as we reached the hospital parking lot, I got out of the car and started pacing towards the entrance. I had my baby standing up in the middle of a parking lot just a few feet away from the hospital since I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I’m just glad we had our midwife to guide us through the whole process.”
It’s nice to know that these women were able to successfully deliver a healthy baby without a doctor by their side.
