Quite honestly, can you imagine a mother who will possibly say no to this question? Given a choice between an Einstein baby and one that resembles an unknown peasant from yesteryear, who would you pick? Thankfully, science is on our side and has been working tirelessly to not only improve the quality of our lives but the quality of our minds as well. Let us not forget that the nature vs. nurture debate still exists – are we born with what we have (thanks to our genes) or do we acquire abilities based on our environment and lifestyles?

You simply cannot discount the effect that genes have on this aspect of your baby’s life. However, your lifestyle has a role to play too. Think of it as the right kind of lifestyle ensuring that those genes are put in all the right places and programmed. Not a scientifically accurate statement to make, but it’s a close enough analogy for you to understand what’s really being done here.

When you come right down to it, it’s not that difficult to get a beautiful, brainy baby. All you need to know is what to eat and what to avoid. Consider the following tips, and you’ll come out with the best version of your baby as you possibly could.

As we’re all well aware, sunlight is one of our biggest sources of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential when it comes to pregnancy. In fact, a new study shows that its deficiency causes brain dysfunction (1). So aside from eating right, try to get some time outside in the sunshine, taking a 20-minute walk perhaps to bask in the sunlight.

2. Folic Acid

Folic acid can be one of the best things you can take during pregnancy. In fact, some advise taking it four weeks in advance of conception to increase the levels in your blood. It prevents birth-defects, brain development problems as well as any possible complications with your baby’s spinal cord (2).

4. Omega-3 Fatty Acid

These are essential in developing fatty acids in general. Infants who do not get enough of these during their in utero phase are at risk of developing vision and nerve problems later on in life (4).

5. Iron

Iron is that all-important chemical that binds with oxygen before it is delivered anywhere within the body. Hence, iron is essential if you want your baby’s brain getting enough oxygen.

6. Protein

Protein is important for boosting the growth of cells in the body. Hence, eating protein-rich foods is essential in order to increase the development of your baby in general. During pregnancy, your daily protein intake should be at least 10 grams per day. So make sure you eat enough. Dairy products and legumes are rich in protein so make sure you include them in your diet.
