Child leashes have been a topic of debate for many years, and the controversy only seems to be growing. And, there’s no point in arguing that thousands of kids lose their lives due to careless handling, or unfortunate accidents in busy and dangerous environments. While some parents feel that using a leash is an effective way to keep their children safe and secure, others argue that it can be detrimental to the physical and emotional development of the child. This can be especially helpful in crowded public places, such as shopping malls, hills, water bodies, or airports, where it is difficult for parents to keep track of their child’s whereabouts at all times. Many types of modern-day leashes come equipped with extra features like pockets or carrying cases so you can store snacks and other items your kid may need throughout the day without having to worry about leaving anything behind when you switch locations quickly.
Do You Need A Child Leash For Your Curious Kid?

Child leashes can be very important when it comes to keeping your little ones safe. While you all want your children to explore and have fun, there are times when their curiosity can lead them into danger.
One such unfortunate incident that took place at the Cincinnati Zoo, Ohio in 2016 led everyone in shock. A child ran off and jumped into a zoo ditch to get a closer look at the animals. He was dragged by a gorilla, but thankfully later got rescued. The kid’s curiosity almost proved to be fatal and unfortunately, the animal had to be shot to save the child. Witnesses concluded that all of this could’ve been avoided if the kid was handled responsibly or for a surprise, attached to a leash.
Well, this was just one of the many incidents which take place every year where kids lose or almost lose their life because of parental carelessness in a not-so-child-friendly-environment. And believe it or not, kids can fall into trouble in the safest-sounding places as well. So in that kind of case, a child leash is always a good option, because we know precaution is better than cure.
Why Are Child Leashes Hated So Much?

Child leashes, though popular, have met with a great deal of criticism. Many parents feel that child leashes are demeaning and damaging to the child’s sense of independence. Here are a few points that parents put forward when saying a big no-no to their child leashes:
- It’s Not Good For Their Kid’s Self-respect
Many people argue that using a leash on your child is degrading and disrespectful. Making a kid wear a child leash shows that you don’t trust them enough to stay by your side without being physically attached. It can cause embarrassment or humiliation if other people see you using one in public as it suggests you lack control over your own offspring.
- It Can Cause Discomfort
If it is worn for extended periods, the harness or backpack that makes up the leash may be uncomfortable or irritating for some children. It can leave marks on their back or even give them pain if they have been pulled harshly.
- It Limits Their Independence
Children may feel constrained and unable to move and play as they would like to, which can impede their development and cause unnecessary stress.
- It’s False Overprotecting
Child leashes can also give parents a false sense of security, as they are not entirely foolproof and may not prevent all accidents or incidents from occurring. For example, in some situations, such as crowded or busy areas, the cord or strap of the child’s leash may pose a tripping hazard for the child or others around them.
