When a couple trying to conceive finds out that they are pregnant, they feel like they are on cloud nine. There’s probably no other feeling that compares to how lucky, fortunate and happy they feel to be blessed with life. Sure, one might think it was all fun and excitement to get there but doing the deed at a scheduled time and date isn’t as fun as one can imagine. Ideally, a couple takes about a year to get pregnant once they begin trying to conceive (1). Of course, several factors come into play, like fertility, lifestyle, age, how often you have intercourse, reproductive health, and general health.

However, you know you’ve successfully conceived once you see the plus sign after you pee on a stick. In some cases, it could be a false positive, so it’s best to consult a medical professional and get a blood test to confirm your pregnancy. Once you know you’re pregnant, it is entirely up to you to decide whom you wish to share the good news with.

If you’ve been trying to conceive for a while, you’ve probably selected your doctor and consulted them regarding various decisions related to your pregnancy. So you would have informed them about your pregnancy. However, some other medical professionals should know about your pregnancy to ensure the safety of you and your baby. Here is a list of five people who should be informed about your pregnancy:

  • Dentist

You might be wondering what the connection is between your dentist and your pregnancy. While there is no direct link between the two, your dentist must be informed if you’re pregnant. The medicines they prescribe, right from painkillers to antibiotics, are a big no-no when you’re pregnant. Bleeding gums are another common symptom of pregnancy, and hence your dentist should be aware of your condition (2).

  • Allergist

If you are prone to allergies, you’ll probably have an allergist on your speed dial. Inform them that you’re pregnant so that when and if you do have an allergic reaction, they can prescribe the proper medication suitable for your pregnant health. It should be safe for you and your baby and not cause both of you any harm.

  • Dermatologist

Inform your dermatologist that you’re pregnant to know what creams and medication you should stop or continue to use. Certain acne medications are known to cause congenital disabilities, so it’s crucial that you keep your dermatologist in the loop (3).

  • Psychiatrist

If you’re taking prescribed medication by your psychiatrist, you might have to change some of them once you’re pregnant. You may continue with the same medication in some cases, but in other cases, you might definitely have to switch it up. There’s no way to know unless you speak to your doctor. So don’t be afraid to give them a ring and tell them that you’re pregnant.

  • Pharmacist

Many times the importance of a pharmacist goes unnoticed. They help you through what’s good for you when you go to them with a condition, or they guide you to the right doctor. If you have a regular pharmacist you visit, inform them that you’re pregnant, and they’ll be able to help you with what medicine/supplements are good for you and what’s not.

While being pregnant is a huge responsibility, there are several things you need to know about it apart from the obvious. Yes, you decide to disclose the news to whomsoever you wish. But these are a few people that you have to keep posted about your pregnancy so that you and your baby are safe and sound. Was this article informative and helpful to you?
