Choosing your due date sounds so easy. It verily means that you are going to have a C-section, you won’t have to worry about screaming while in labor, nor would you have to worry about any untimely events. Things rather sound a lot more smooth-sailing with a planned hospital bag and a couple of luxuries to accompany you! But then is it worth to ‘choose’ your due date? And why would you want to choose your due date in the first place?
1. Astrological Significance
It’s interesting how a number of women like to choose their due date in line with astrological significance. There is a mania about the dates and the numerological significance that one’s child is supposed to carry with his time of birth. Yes, they all do it. So they talk to their doctors to schedule a planned C-section. But it’s not just the date. To them, the precise time of pulling the baby out also counts! But what if your doctor doesn’t manage to be spot on?
2. Baby Born Around Momâs Date Of Birth
It’s true that daughters weigh out their moms more than their mom-in-laws. So to them, it makes sense to have their child share the birthdays with their maternal grandmother! Sounds crazy. But there are a lot many women out there who would do this!
3. Apathy For Certain Dates
How about your child being born on 29th of February! Or on April Fool’s Day, which is the 1st of April. Or dates that mark tragedies in history such as the 11th of September? If mothers have a hint that they can expect to have their child around these dates, they would want to talk to their doc and prepone their due dates, sometimes even by a week.
4. Extra Special Birthday
If you can have your baby born on Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Independence Day, it just adds the extra fervor to your holiday spirits and doubles up the excitement. Doesn’t it? Have your thinking caps on already, mothers?
5. Simply Want A C-Section And Not A Vaginal Birth
Yes, quite often women are willing to take advantage of the maternal benefit policies that they might be entitled to and evade a laborious scary vaginal birth. They do freak out at the thought of labor and can become choosy.
Whatever might be the reason for you choosing a planned C-section because you have already chosen your date of delivery, your doctor will most likely schedule a date that is just a week ahead of your predicted due date. That way there are fewer chances that the woman will go through labor much before her C-section date. This is also good in a way that your baby has had a fairly decent gestation period and therefore, has grown fairly well. A full term gestation period is always good for the child.
Now don’t forget that C-section is also an advantage for your doctor regarding the necessary revenues. So, in choosing to have a C-section, you are naturally opening the doors for your doctor. But the procedural norms would bear mutual consent and within the necessary legal frame-work.
The bottom line, however, remains as to how early your baby wants to come into the world. Your baby is likely to arrive a bit late if it is your first pregnancy. With the second or the third pregnancies, you might as well be prepared for an unexpected delivery time, brushing aside your plans for a C-section around the choice of your due dates.
