Photosynthesis is the process through which plants turn sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into sugar (glucose) and release oxygen. Use this fill-in-the-blanks ‘process of photosynthesis’ worksheet to help refresh your child’s understanding of the topic.

To recap from our introduction to process of photosynthesis worksheet, the word photosynthesis, having Greek origins, is a combination of the words ‘photo,’ which means ‘light,’ and ‘synthese,’ which means ‘composition.’ Learn more about this magical process in the sections below.

How Does Photosynthesis Work?

The process of photosynthesis happens in two main stages.

1. Capturing sunlight

  • The chlorophyll absorbs sunlight.
  • Sunlight provides energy to break water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen.

2. Making food

  • The plant combines hydrogen from water with carbon dioxide from the air.
  • This creates glucose, which is the plant’s food.
  • The oxygen produced as a byproduct is released into the air through the stomata.

Why Is Photosynthesis Important?

  1. Food production: Plants use glucose for growth. Without photosynthesis, plants would not survive and there would be no food for humans and animals.
  2. Oxygen creation: Plants release oxygen during photosynthesis, which is the air we breathe in. Plants are called “lungs of the earth” for this reason.
  3. Exchange: Humans and animals breathe in oxygen and release carbon dioxide, while plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

This free ‘process of photosynthesis’ worksheet can further reinforce your child’s knowledge about the amazing food-production process of plants in a fun way. Photosynthesis is beneficial to not only plants but also most life forms on Earth.

Key Pointers

  • Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their food.
  • Life on Earth would not exist without photosynthesis.
  • Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, while we breathe oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
